Boxing Spotlight: Laura Saperstein

Friday night, at the York Hall, Bethnall Green, London – female boxer Laura Saperstein, fighting out of Kentish Town, made her first appearance on a major fight card promoted by Frank Maloney. Saperstein, aka ‘Boxergirl’, faced Ukrainian Olena Varchenko in a 4 x 2 minute light welterweight contest in which Varchenko was making her professional debut.

It was a messy fight with a lot of grappling between the two boxers, but Saperstein looked the more polished of the two. Immediately after the bell signalled the end of the contest, Saperstein turned to the referee and said “Oh, that was horrible!”

Saperstein wins on points 40:36 giving her a second victory at professional level.

Now aged 36, Saperstein swapped a successful career in Law to turn boxer. Originally from Australia, Ms. Saperstein moved to London – turning to boxing in 2001. She became professional last year having clocked- up a 10-0 amateur record.

With a desire to highlight women boxers, Ms Saperstein has set up a website, www.boxergirl.co.uk (which is in the process of migrating to www.boxergirl.net ) to create a database and forum of female boxers. At last count, the database already had 110 lady boxers.

The ‘BoxerGirl’ is thrilled to be working with Frank Maloney and has signed a four fight contract. It’s an unusual move for the promoter – but, keen to ‘move with the times‘, Mr. Maloney is happy to promote a female boxer who is clearly gaining a lot of media interest.
