Star Boxing: Devin Vargas Primed To Impress This Saturday In Laughlin

ByBoxing Press 08/02/2008

When Devin Vargas splashed onto the pro boxing scene back in 2004 after coming home from the Summer Games in Greece, it was clear, after knocking out his first three opponents in the first round, that the boxing world would be feeling his “ripple effect” for years to come.

This Saturday, February 9th at The Aquarius Casino Resort in Laughlin, Nevada, Devin Vargas (14-0, 6 KO’s) will bring his undefeated record and power into the ring against the very rugged Charles Davis (17-14, 4 KO’s). In what is sure to be a crowd- pleasing knock-down-drag-out heavyweight main event battle, Vargas will not only be facing a tough test, but with a victory on Saturday, he will be making another important stride towards a heavyweight title shot opportunity.

As the 2004 US Olympic Team Captain, Vargas is used to stepping up to a challenge and taking the lead, which is exactly what he plans to do against Davis, who has defeated the likes of “King” Arthur Williams, Javier Mora, and Willie Chapman.

Since his days of becoming a two-time National Golden Gloves Champion (2000 and 2001), Vargas has continued to elevate his level of competition in each and every fight. Consistently taking on the best opponents available, so that one day, when he is called to take on the heavyweight champ, Vargas will be ready and able to take the championship.

“Devin is one of the most exciting and talented heavyweights in the division. Since his 2004 Olympic run he has quietly and steadily boxed his way up the ranks and is consistently mentioned at the top of the hot heavyweights prospects list” said Vargas promoter Joe DeGuardia, of Star Boxing. “He has all the makings of being a champion and we look forward to getting him to the top”

Last October, Vargas delighted fight fans when he took on the powerful Josh Gutcher (18-6, 13 KO’s) and stopped him at the midway point in the fourth round. Vargas also impressed onlookers in two other 2007 fights displaying his superior boxing skills, virtually shutting out both Mujaheed Moore and Earl Ladson on all three judges’ scorecards.

Whether it is through his destructive onslaught of leather upon his opponent’s face, or bone crushing bombs to his opponent’s ribs, Vargas has all the firepower he needs in his arsenal to cause serious havoc in the big boy division until he has a title wrapped around his waist.

With an increasing number of young undefeated heavyweights racing their way up to championship contention, Vargas knows his path will soon cross with one of these promising fighters, and he relishes the day he gets to lace up his gloves to prove that he is the best in the batch of future belt holders.

Possible match-ups may include battles with Chris Arreola, Malik Scott, Michael Marrone, Travis Walker, “Fast” Eddie Chambers, Derrick Rossy, or perhaps even Star Boxing stablemate Kevin Johnson, considered by many to be the #1 Heavyweight prospect in the World.

However, the one fight that would be most intriguing for fight fans and one Vargas would desire most is against his undefeated Olympic counterpart Alexander Povetkin, who recently earned the #1 spot in the IBF by defeating Chambers last month.

Not only do Vargas and Povetkin share the experience of representing their respective homelands in the 2004 Games, but they share virtually the same professional experience, and Vargas knows that a fight against Povetkin would be a victory for both himself and the heavyweight deprived USA boxing fans.

Whether Vargas uses his superior power, boxing skills or a little bit of both to defeat Davis on Saturday is yet to be seen, but what is certain is that he will continue taking on the best available opponents, putting on his best performance, and pleasing his audience all the way to heavyweight superstardom.

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]
