Last night at the Robin Park Arena in Wigan, England, Steve Woods of VIP Boxing staged an action-packed night of boxing billed as ʽLights Going Outʼ. The main event featured popular Mark Thompson of Heywood, Lancashire, as he faced Polish Boxer Maurycy Gojko, for the Masters International Welterweight title.
But it was a quick nightʼs work for Thompson as he polished-off Gojko in round one of the contest! The Polish man was on the canvas in the first minute of the round but jumped up quickly to take the count from Referee Steve Gray.
A hard left-hook from Thompson, 15-1 (9), sent Gojko,13-9-1 (5), crashing to the canvas in the second half of the round and the impact of his head on the canvas could be heard clearly around ringside! Gojko got to his feet, but Grey stopped the fight just seconds later – seeing that the Pole had not fully recovered from the blow. An impressive victory for Thompson – who afterward proudly ʽdonnedʼ the ʽMasters International Welterweightʼ belt.
A total of nine contests were scheduled last night, although the scheduled first bout of the night- a lightweight contest between Lee Jennings and Chris Kitson was cancelled as Kitson was shockingly one stone [14 lb] over the weight limit!
On the undercard, Alastair Morrison, 1-0 (0), of Cumbria gained a points win over Dave Pearson, 6-21-1 (1), of Middlesborough in a six-round super middleweight contest.
Lightweight Tamao Dwyer, 1-0 (1), of Manchester, successfully defeated Senol Dervis, 0-4 (0), of Salford when Dervis was retired by his corner in round two of the contest, having sustained a cut to the right eye.
Popular Jon Kays, 5-0 (2), of Ashton-under-Lyne, gained a points win over ʽRockinʼ Robin Deacon, 1-9 (0), of Crawley in a four-round super featherweight contest. Former British and Commonwealth Lightweight Champion Graham Earl was introduced to the crowd as Deaconʼs trainer.
Next up was Chris OʼBrien, training out of Bobby Rimmer’s Boxing Academy. This was OʼBriensʼ pro-debut and although a tough first contest for the young Manchester boxer, he successfully defeated last minute opponent – Welshman Russell Pearce, 1-2-1 (0), in a 6×2 minute welterweight bout.
It was also a successful pro-debut for Liverpool fighter Mike Robinson as he out pointed experienced Wolverhampton Boxer Delroy Spencer, 10-65-3 (1), over six rounds at super bantamweight.
Another very popular boxer, Alex Matvienko of Bolton, scored a fourth and final round TKO over Colchester-based Drew Campbell, 1-5 (0). After a total of 13 fights, Matvienko now has 11 wins and 2 draws.
Blackpool boxer Brian Rose had huge support as he faced late opponent – the experienced Ernie Smith, 13-128-5 (1), aka ʽGypsy Boyʼ of Stourport-on-Severn. It wasnʼt an easy fight against the tough and experienced Smith, but Rose kept focussed as trainer Bobby Rimmer shouted encouragement from the corner. Winning on points, Rose takes his record to eight wins and 1 draw.
