Elcock ʽSnatchedʼ it!

It was a disappointing night for Dudley body-snatcher Darren McDermott last evening as a bad cut forced a second round stoppage against Britain’s top middleweight Wayne ʽMad Dogʼ Elcock at Civic Hall in Wolverhampton, England on a Hennessy Sports promotion.

Elcock, coming back from a loss to IBF Champion Arthur Abraham in December, was defending his British Middleweight title against the undefeated Dudley man.

It was a fantastic ʽrowdyʼ atmosphere that packed the ʽhallʼ and the fight got off to a good start as both men settled in. But, a clash of heads in round two caused a terrible gaping cut to the left cheek of McDermott and a small cut above – just below the brow.

Referee Howard Foster was quick to react and ushered McDermott over to the corner where the ringside doctor advised against continuing the fight.

The contest was stopped much to the obvious distress of McDermott who motioned to ringside that the injury was from Elcockʼs head. The McDermott fans were in uproar, booing and chanting ʼCheat, Cheatʼ but Elcock was clearly delighted to have retained his belt.

Afterward, Promoter Mick Hennessy, told Sky Presenter Ed Robinson, that he would have to speak to Elcock before commenting on a possible re-match, but felt that Elcock would probably like a return bout as this was a big fight for the Midlands.

McDermott needed ten stitches to the cut on his cheek.

Elcock improves to 19-3 (9) while McDermott drops to 14-1-1 (9).

Also on the bill, Telford welterweight Mark Lloyd, 11-1 (3), stopped Andrew Alan Lowe, 7-2 (1), at 1:31 of the eighth to annex the vacant British Midlands Area title.

Light welter Rob Hunt, 10-0 (1), stayed perfect with a six round points verdict against Alex Brew, 9-5-1 (7), light middle Rob Kenney, 7-0-1 (0), also kept his winning streak with a four round decision against Drew Campbell, 1-6 (0).

Irish welter Stephen Haughian, 14-1 (6), won his second on the bounce with a second round stoppage of Raul Saiz, 7-5-1 (6), and light welter Steve Saville, 16-4 (6), won a four rounder by points over Baz Carey, 11-34-4 (3).

Also winning on the card were super bantam Lindsay Scragg, welterweight James Flinn, light middle Jamie Ball, middleweight Keiron Gray and super middle Russ Colley.
