Former Kenyan, East & Central Africa and WBF Intercontinental champion David Kiilu, 28-8-2 (15), will move down in weight to fight undefeated Ludumo Galada, 11-0 (4), for the vacant WBF featherweight title on August 22 at the Orient Theatre in East London, South Africa, a title Kiilu has previously challenged for without luck.
In 2006, he was convincingly edged by world class Mongolian Choi Tseveenpurev in England, but later delivered an outright magnificent performance for the super featherweight version against Cyril Thomas in France where he very controversially lost on points.
Now Kiilu has been awarded another crack at the belt recently vacated by Tseveenpurev, and this might be his biggest opportunity so far:
“David is for sure more experienced than Galada, and boxing-wise I don’t think the South African will be better, so this could be a very evenly contested and exiting fight,” sai Kiilo’s manager Henrik Risum. “I think David has an excellent chance of winning another title, and doing so in his opponents backyard will be a fantastic achievement”.
Despite having only eleven professional fights, Ludumo Galda has already been involved in one fight scheduled for ten rounds, and four fights scheduled for twelve rounds. He is the reigning South African Featherweight Champion, and is considered one of the most talented young fighters in his native country. Not an easy task for Kiilu, but Risum remains optimistic:
“If David shows up at his best, I think he will have too much for Galada, even on away ground. In any case this is a great opportunity for Kiilu to go to that next level he has been craving for a long time. He looked good last time out when he returned after a lay-off due to injury, and we have had plenty of notice for this bout so he should be in excellent shape”.
It will not be the first bout in So uth Africa for Kiilu. Back in 1999 he scored a four-round draw with fellow undefeated novice Mpumeleo Khota in Benoni in what was the first professional fight outside his native country for the Kenyan stylists. This time he will obviously be aiming at going one better and getting the victory.
