NABF Boxing Champ Matt Godfrey Calls Out Rob Calloway

ByBoxing Press 06/08/2008

NABF Cruiserweight Champion Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey, 16-1 (9), had his nose bent out of shape, so to speak, by recent comments attributed to Rob “All American Prize Fighter” Calloway.

Calloway, 70-7-2 (56), was quoted as saying, “I’ve never turned down any fight!” He went on to proclaim that he deserved a title fight because he’s the WBC Americas Champion and proceeded to call out Rudolf Kraj, Firat Arslan and Enzo Maccaranelli.

Godfrey took offense on two counts: Team Calloway passed on an opportunity to fight Godfrey for his NABF belt on August 29 in an ESPN main event; Calloway is rated No. 11, behind No. 5 Godfrey.

“I know Rob and he’s a great guy,” Godfrey said, “but my speed and movement would be too much for him to handle. If he wants to fight the elite guys in the cruiserweight division, he should have taken the fight against me to prove himself. I am an elite cruiserweight – No. 5 — but he didn’t take the fight.”

Despite Rob proclaiming he’d fight anyone in the world given three weeks notice, Team Calloway reportedly passed on Godfrey because Rob had a fight July 19 against Max Alexande, 14-2-1, which ended in a 12 round draw. Godfrey’s only loss as a pro was a close 12 round decision in a WBC title eliminator to Kraj in Germany this past March.

Gofrey, second heavyweight alternate on the 2004 US Olympic Boxing Team, had a 194-23 amateur record, capturing six national championships; four open tournaments including the 2004 Everlast US Championships, plus two in the Junior Olympics, as well as a Bronze Medal at the 2001 Pan American Games, Silver in all four of that year’s national major tournaments (National Golden Gloves, PAL, US Championships and US Challenge) and six time New England Golden Gloves champion.

Godfrey was a highly decorated US amateur who defeated many of today’s contemporary pro boxers in the amateurs such as former WBA middleweight title challenger Randy “The Gentleman Griffin, 24-2-3 (12), unbeaten heavyweight prospect Chazz “Mensa With Muscles” Witherspoon, 23-1 (15), Devin Vargas, 16-0 (7), Corey “Black Ice” Cummings, 16-3 (12), Leonard “Haitian Sensation” Pierre, 18-3 (13), and John Johnson, 12-2 (10).

  • Ain't we all want to see Jai v David? 14/09/2026
Don’t we? Let’s cut all of the bullshit here. This is the only fight worth a $100 PPV buy, it’s Jai Opetai v David Benavidez. Canelo is in the background now. He is not worthy of paying any attention to at this point and time. Plus, since Crawford is retired, he is not worth mentioning either, even if he comes back to fight Boots… There is no other fight on […]
  • Where does Conor Benn go from here? 14/09/2026
Conor Benn has been exposed as a no better than a Misfit fighter. He has just been destroyed in 2 rounds for an undeserved Welterweight world title. His best win is against a faded if not shot Eubank Jnr at middleweight. So where does Conor go from here? Conor has already managed to secure a multimillion contract from Zuffa which may be in jeopardy. As a res […]

I did it. Ran a half marathon in training last week Sunday. I did it in 3 hours, but I did it… lolol… I could do it in 2 and 1/2 hours though. For the first time, I walked a good bit of the distance… And the shoes I had on was not good for long distances. So, I started to get pains in my ankles, Achilles and ACL… But with the right shoes I can def do that in […]

  • Hrgovic's career path 05/09/2026
Hrgovic has finally made it to the mountain as IBF world champion. He has himself to blame for not training hard enough or working on his conditioning, and his management team for failing to get him a title shot sooner. I get it. He wasn’t born with boxing’s golden ticket — he isn’t American or British. His only loss came on a night when a dirty Dubois had h […]

  • Hrgovic sparred with Deontay- He had no fear of Itauma's power 02/09/2026
That was just the truth. Yes, Itauma has great power. But Filip was in there training with, arguably, the hardest hitter the division has ever seen. He could never be afraid of Itauma. That was a critical mental edge Filip had over Itauma. 5 posts - 4 participants Read full topic […]
