The third title fight of the night at Nottingham on Friday was the English Light Welterweight title clash between ‘Super Scotty’ Haywood of Derby and Dean ‘Deano’ Harrison of Wolverhampton.

It was a close evenly matched contest between these two with nothing between them in the early rounds. A big swinging right from the Wolverhampton man clips the temple of Haywood at the start of round eight and the crowd erupts as popular Haywood covers up on the ropes.

Harrison piles on the pressure – releasing a barrage of body shots and Haywood digs in with a tight defense. Haywood comes back with some straight punches of his own but it’s a great round for Harrison and he catches Haywood again with a right to the temple and a left hook to the chin.

An excited Bob Plant is leaning over me (in my photographers position) and shouting instruction to his charge. In the last half minute of the round, Haywood releases lefts and rights to the head and body of Harrison and they both slug it out till the end of the frame.

Round nine is close again with both men landing shots. Haywood looks better this round but it’s anybody’s contest.

A big right punch from Haywood catches Harrison in the opening seconds of the tenth and final round but Harrison soaks it up and keeps his stance. “Work, Dean” Bob Plant shouts – urging his charge to give it everything he’s got. Referee Howard Foster calls time out just as Haywood lands another shot and he ‘bows’ his apologies.

As the bell signals the end of the round, Foster raises Haywood’s arm aloft and “Super Scott” falls to the canvas with trainer Mike Shinfield as they celebrate his title win.

Haywood wins on points 96-95.
