From undercard to main event status, Demetrius Hopkins, 28-0-1 (11), of Philadelphia looks to dethrone WBO junior welterweight champ Kendall Holt, 24-2 (13), of Paterson, N.J. in the marquee fight of Saturdayʼs special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation, live from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ on Showtime at 11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast.
The 28-year-old Hopkins was originally scheduled to fight Germaine Sanders on the undercard of Saturdayʼs bout, but Holtʼs original opponent, Ricardo Torres, withdrew from the fight on Monday due to illness.
Now, Holt will have his hands full with the undefeated Hopkins, the nephew of former middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins. When he learned Torres pulled out, Hopkins jumped at the opportunity to fight for his first world title.
Hopkins defeated Holt in their only previous meeting in the quarterfinals of the 1999 Golden Gloves amateur competition.
Hopkins looked impressive in his media workout yesterday at The Spa at Ceasars Atlantic City.
The ShoBox co-feature pits two of New Yorkʼs top junior middleweight prospects against each other, undefeated Yuri Foreman, 26-0 (8), of Brooklyn, will take on James Moore, 16-1 (10), of Queens.
