Last night at Robin Park Arena in Wigan, England, Oliver Harrison hosted a fight night billed as ‘Saints & Sinners: The Best of St. Helens!’ which was headlined by boxers Craig Lyon and Rob Beech from the nearby town of St. Helens. Unfortunately, Lyon’s opponent, Cobina Johnson of Ghana, came in overweight and the bout was called off at the last minute.
But the show thankfully went on and first up, we see the light welterweight clash between Chris Goodwin of Chester and Daniel Thorpe of Sheffield.
It’s good contest with Goodwin having to work hard to get the win over a tough Thorpe. Goodwin wins on points 59-56 and improves to 9 wins 1 loss and 1 draw. Veteran Thorpe notched up his 101st fight!
Heavyweight Martin ‘Grid’ Grainger of Heywood faced Jason Callum of Coventry in a four round contest.
A less-toned Callum sustained a cut between his eyebrows during round two but it didn’t deter him. In the fourth, he is accidentally tripped over by Grainger, which seemed to faze Callum, as he takes a couple of big heavy punches from the smaller Heywood man.
Grainger wins on points 40-37 to gain his first victory – having lost on his debut to seasoned campaigner Paul Bonson.
Popular Paul ‘Spartan’ Economides of Chester faced tough Walsall boxer Delroy Spencer in a four round super bantamweight contest.
Spencer – always a handful for any opponent – gave Economides a good contest, landing as much as he was given, but Economides kept up a high defence and used the left and right jab with success.
Economides wins on points 39-37 and improves to 5 wins, no losses.
St. Helens boxer Rob Beech faced Lee Mountford of Pudsey, Yorkshire, in a four round heavyweight contest.
Dipping low, the bigger Mountford lunges in with some big straight lefts and rights while a calmer Beech scores with the right to gain a good points win 40-36.
Beech notches up his second win, having pro-debuted against Howard Daley last time out.
