SaddoBoxing caught up with Liverpool boxer Gary Davies today, ahead of his British Bantamweight title fight on April 3 at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, England.

Davies faces Welshman Matthew Edmonds of Newport in what promises to be an all-action contest.

Davies was impressive last time out when he fought former British Champion Martin Power at Dublin University in December. Seriously ‘fired-up’ for the bout – a determined Davies scored a second round TKO over the Londoner – proving he was ‘Too Much’ for Power.

Now Davies has his sights set on a title and it seems there’s no stopping his determination.

“This will be the best Gary Davies you’ve ever seen!” the likeable Liverpudlian promised. “When I fought Power – I trained once a day and couldn’t get time off work. Now, work have given me four weeks off to train for the Edmonds fight, so I‘ve trained two or three times a day, six days a week.

“I run 10 miles a day, swim half a mile, do gym sessions and 16 rounds. I’ve had some great sparring with the likes of Terry Flannigan, who is very quick, Paul Lowe and John Gilbert. They are mixed weights and I would stay in the ring while they came in to do a few rounds each – it was a good hard work-out for me. I’m concentrating on speed.”

Davies is on target for the weight. He has a check weight today, but yesterday was 8 stone 11 [121 pounds] and has no worries about any weight issues.

Asked what Davies thought of his opponent, Matthew Edmonds, he replied “ I respect him, you’ve gotta; he’s only lost 2 out of 12 fights.

“He’s sharp, fast and busy, so I need to be ‘on my game’. ‘Focussed’ is the word! It’s going to be an all-out war for 12 rounds – it might even be the ‘Fight of the Year’ !
