Boxing South Of The Border: Montiel, Soto, Lopez Win World Title Bouts

Last night at Plaza de Toros in Tijuana, Mexico, WBO Super Flyweight Champion Fernando Montiel, 39-2-1 (29), made the successful jump to bantamweight, capturing the interim WBO crown at 118 pounds by knocking out Argentina’s Diego Oscar Silva, 24-2-3 (12), in the third round.

Montiel was in control the whole way, canvassing Silva in the second and at the start of the third before finishing the job at 2:24 of the third round.

In a WBC Super Feather title clash, reigning champion Humberto Soto, 47-7-2 (30), was dominant against challenger Antonio Davis, 26-5 (13), dropping the American in the first and twice in the fourth before forcing the bout to be stopped at 2:38 of the fourth frame when Davis could no longer defend himself.

Light middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, 39-0-1 (29), retained his WBC Continental Americas crown during a ten round slugfest before producing a points victory over previously undefeated Luciano Leonel Cuello, 23-1 (10), by scores of 98-92, 96-95 and 96-94.

Former welterweight contender Antonio Diaz, 46-5-1 (29), continued his comeback by outpointing Javier Castro, 19-2 (17), by marks of 96-93 twice and 95-94 over ten rounds.

At Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Jose Lopez, 39-7-2 (32), won the vacant WBO Super Flyweight title with a twelve round unanimous decision against Pramuansak Posuwan, 45-2-1 (24).

37 year old Lopez held numerous regional belts at flyweight and super fly, failing to lift the WBO Flyweight crown four times but managed to outbox 40 year old “Machine Gun” Posuwan, a longtime WBO Asia Pacific Champ last night.

Ex-WBA Flyweight Champ Eric Morel, 41-2 (21), posted a ten round UD over Roberto Bonilla, 22-11 (13), at bantam and welterweight Henry Bruseles, 28-3-1 (15), won a ten rounder on points over Mario Ramos, 17-6-1 (3).

Former WBA Super Middle Champ Manny Siaca, 22-6 (19), stopped George Klinesmith, 24-14-4 (14), in the first round at middleweight.

At Estadio Polideportivo Juan Domingo Ribosqui in Maipu, Argentina, lightweight Daniel Eduardo Brizuela, 16-0-1 (6), dropped southpaw Dario Miguel Lombardo, 15-8 (6), in the 12th and final frame enroute to winning the decision and retaining the WBO Latino crown.
