Charlie Edwards and Sikho Nqothole Make Weight Ahead of York Hall Eliminator
The atmosphere picked up nicely at Thursday’s weigh-in ahead of Friday night’s York Hall card, with several fighters already sounding like they’d happily start throwing punches there and then.
Charlie Edwards and Sikho Nqothole both comfortably made weight for their IBF World Super Flyweight title eliminator, but the challenger made it clear he has zero interest in playing the respectful underdog role.
Edwards hit the scales at 114.8lbs, while Nqothole came in slightly lighter at 114.5lbs.
Nqothole looked calm and confident afterwards and didn’t hold back when asked about the former world champion.
“I’m ready for him. I’m not scared. He is nothing special and I’m prepared for anything tomorrow, but my hand will be raised,” said the South African.
Edwards seemed more than happy to hear it.
“I’m happy I’m being underestimated and he will see who is special tomorrow,” Edwards replied before thanking Jesus Christ and saying he feels blessed to be back in this position.
The former WBC flyweight champion added that he is treating the fight like a world title bout and said he respects Nqothole but is fully ready for Friday night.
Toward and Corrie Promise Action
The vacant WBA Continental Super Welterweight title fight between Dan Toward and Jak Corrie suddenly feels like one of the most explosive fights on the card after both men exchanged confident predictions at the weigh-in.
Both fighters came in at exactly 153.4lbs.
Corrie believes he is ready to move onto bigger things and says Toward is simply standing in the way.
“All the hard work is done. Dan is in my way and I need to remove him and move on to bigger and better things,” said Corrie.
He then doubled down with a bold prediction.
“One hundred percent I will be making a statement tomorrow. I will take him out.”
Toward wasn’t exactly in the mood to stay quiet either.
“Sixteen years of graft and I’m ready to take this with both hands. I’m gonna bash him up,” he fired back.
Osborne and Cooper Bring The Tension
The face-off between James Osborne and Ollie Cooper for the vacant English Super Middleweight title probably had the most genuine needle of the afternoon.
Osborne weighed 166.4lbs, while Cooper came in at 166.7lbs.
Things immediately turned awkward when Cooper refused to shake Osborne’s hand after it was offered.
“I can see the nerves in James’s eyes and he is shaking,” Cooper claimed.
He then went after Osborne’s style.
“He is as one-dimensional as they come and he will just walk into a shot tomorrow and I’ll take him out. I’ve done everything properly and I’m really looking forward to being punched in the face.”
Osborne looked unfazed by the comments.
“Let him think I’m nervous. I’m ready for him. He’s deluded,” Osborne responded.
“This will be my biggest win to date. Getting the English title will be an achievement. I’m ready for it.”
Rest of the Card
Tom Welland and Saleh Kassim both weighed 125.3lbs ahead of their vacant Commonwealth International Featherweight title fight.
At cruiserweight, unbeaten prospect Lucas Roehrig came in at 199.5lbs, while Faton Tolaj was just behind him at 199.4lbs.
York Hall cards normally come with a bit of noise anyway, but this one feels like it has a little extra edge to it now. A couple of these fighters already seem sick of the sight of each other.
