There was some great support action at the Seaburn Centre in Sunderland, England on the Frank Maloney promotion headlined by Lee Haskins’ British super flyweight title defense against Ross Burkinshaw on Friday.

On the undercard, local man Trevor Crewe faced Bulgarian-born Danny Dontchev in a four round welterweight contest. Enjoying big crowd support, Crewe gets straight to work and Dontchev is down inside the opening minute of the first round from a left-right to the head.

Moments later, Crewe lands an uppercut which sees Dontchev’s legs wobble. He lands on the canvas but from a bundling over and was not counted.

With just over a minute of the first round remaining, Crewe lands a number of left and right shots which starts with a left hook to the face and finished with a right – bang on the nose of Dontchev – who’s head flops backwards and he falls to the canvas.

Crewe notches up his second pro win, against no losses, by TKO round two.

Blackpool light middleweight Brian ‘The Lion’ Rose enjoyed his first eight rounder on Friday against Francis Togba Tchoffo, the yellow haired Cameroonian now based in France.

Rose gets off to a cool, classy start using his long-reaching left jab with success on Tchoffo. Looking focussed, Rose commanded the ring while shorter Tchoffo tried to get in close. In the closing seconds of round two, a short right from Rose followed by a solid left hook sends Tchoffo to the canvas.

Round three sees Tchoffo settle in. As they start round four, Tchoffo goes in with a right but as he dips Rose quickly sends in a neat little left and Tchoffo overbalances as Rose launches at him. Tchoffo tries a bit of show-boating but Rose keeps focussed.

Mid-way through the round, Rose sticks in an uppercut and as Tchoffo tries to barge at him, Rose skips away and back in with another jab. But Tchoffo ‘felt’ the uppercut and looks unsettled as Rose dominates. Tchoffo looks a bit scrappy as he swings a couple of shots but Rose keeps up the pressure. In the closing half minute, Rose seems to ease off and Tchoffo picks up the pace.

Round five and six sees Rose not as busy as the first half of the fight and his corner urges him to pick it back up. It starts to look messy as Tchoffo gets in close and both men grapple together. Rose has not been past six rounds and maybe he is getting tired.

Sky Sports statistics reveal that Rose has landed 96 punches as opposed to Tchoffo’s 42.

The eighth and final round sees Rose motivated and he lands a decent right hook to the face of the Frenchman. Moments later, the Blackpool man lands a peach of an uppercut which rouses some applause from the Sunderland crowd.

Tchoffo – on the other hand – not as appreciative, holds on for a second. But Tchoffo still looks ‘bouncy’ as the final minute ticks away, landing a short right to Rose’s body then moments later Rose sustains a cut to the left eye. He doesn’t let it faze him and lands a good right jab to the face of his opponent.

Rose wins on points 79-73 and improves to 13 wins (3 by KO), no losses and 1 draw.

Next up, former Prizefighter contender – David Mark Ferguson of North Shields – faced Daniel Peret the Russian born ‘Shrek’ now living in Norway.

During the six round heavyweight contest, Ferguson seemed to struggle against the weight of experienced Peret.

Ferguson lands a big swinging left shot to the face of Peret in the last minute of the third, but his corner implore him to do more work.

Ferguson looks like he just wants to do ‘enough’ and doesn’t seem motivated to do more. There’s blood around his nose and he dabs at it in round four. It was a close contest with heavy hitting Peret seeming to sap Ferguson’s energy.

The sixth and final round sees Ferguson land a decent right and moments later a good left to the face of the Russian, but he looks tired and both men continue to grapple together.’

Fight stats reveal that Ferguson landed 41 of 223 punches (an 18% success rate) as opposed to Peret’s 51 of 188 (27%).

Peret wasn’t happy that Ferguson got the points win, 59-56, saying, “I worked so hard”, before storming out of the ring.

Ferguson’s record now stands at 9 wins (3 by KO), and 2 losses, both of which were in the Prizefighter series.

Other action in Sunderland included:

Jon-Lewis Dickinson (Newcastle) v Hastings Rasani (Birmingham)
4 x 3 Cruiserweight Contest

Dickinson wins on points 40-37 and his record now stands at 4 wins no losses

Travis Dickinson (Newcastle) v Hamad Jamali (Birmingham)
4 x 3 Light Heavyweight Contest

Dickinson wins by KO round 2 to get his third pro-win against no losses.

Chris Sean Mullen (Sunderland) v Kristian Laight (Nuneaton)

Mullen wins on points 40-36 and his record now stands at 5 wins (2 by KO) and 1 loss.

Kyle King (Wales) v Delroy Spencer (Birmingham)

Welsh boxer King made his pro-debut against experienced veteran Spencer. A tough first contest but King gets the points win, 40-37.

The clash between Spence and Tszyu had reportedly been lined up to take place in June. Tim did suffer a cut in his bout against Nurja, which could potentially delay proceedings. I am concerned that Spence has not fought for years now and having no warm up. This may show that he has not much left and cashing in. Tszyu secured a one-sided unanimous decision wi […]
