Xander Zayas vs Jaron Ennis Headlines Stacked New York Card Live on DAZN PPV
New York has a habit of producing big fight nights and this one looks loaded from top to bottom. The unbeaten clash between Xander Zayas and Jaron Ennis is the obvious attraction, but there’s plenty underneath it to keep boxing fans interested. Ben Whittaker finally makes his long-awaited US debut, Emiliano Vargas gets another chance to show why so many people are talking about him, and hometown favourite Jahi Tucker takes on arguably the toughest opponent of his career.
It’s the kind of card where several fighters could leave Brooklyn with their stock soaring by the end of the night.
Main Event: Xander Zayas vs Jaron Ennis
Xander Zayas (23-0-0) meets Jaron Ennis (35-0-0) in what feels like one of those fights that has divided opinion all week.
Zayas has heard plenty of people questioning whether he’s biting off more than he can chew against the explosive former welterweight champion, while Ennis has dismissed the idea that the younger man is anywhere near his level. The talking is nearly over.
Ennis arrives with the reputation of being one of boxing’s most naturally gifted fighters. His speed, punch variety and ability to switch gears have made him a nightmare for opponents. The question is whether moving up to super welterweight against an unbeaten champion proves to be an easy transition or whether Zayas can make him uncomfortable.
Zayas isn’t unbeaten by accident. He controls distance well, stays composed under pressure and has shown maturity beyond his years. Taking this fight now is a bold move and you could argue it’s either perfect timing or a massive gamble. Either way, fans are getting the matchup they’ve been asking for instead of another stay-busy defence.
Sometimes unbeaten records can flatter fighters. This one feels different. Somebody’s ‘0’ has to disappear, and that’s exactly why this is such an intriguing headline bout.
Co-Main / Key Fights
Jahi Tucker (16-1-1) vs Euri Cedeno (14-0-1)
Brooklyn’s own Jahi Tucker steps into a genuinely dangerous fight against unbeaten Dominican contender Euri Cedeno. Tucker has spoken about wanting the biggest opportunities available and he’s certainly getting one here. Cedeno brings an unbeaten record and won’t be travelling to New York just to make up the numbers. Don’t be surprised if this ends up being one of the night’s most competitive contests.
Emiliano Vargas (17-0-0) vs Bryce Mills (22-1-0)
Emiliano Vargas keeps attracting attention every time he fights and he’ll be looking to make another statement against Bryce Mills. Vargas has been talking confidently ahead of the contest, but Mills arrives with plenty of experience and won’t be easy to break down. If Vargas shines here, the calls for bigger fights are only going to get louder.
Ben Whittaker (11-0-1) vs Richard Rivera (27-2-0)
All eyes will be on Ben Whittaker as he makes his professional debut in the United States against Richard Rivera. Whittaker always attracts attention thanks to his flashy style, but Rivera is experienced enough to punish mistakes. This feels like an important night for the Brit because a convincing performance could open plenty of doors on the American scene.
Undercard
Quincey Williams (6-0-0) vs Jerome Baxter (8-1-0)
Quincey Williams continues his unbeaten start against Jerome Baxter, who represents another useful step up in competition.
Dennis Thompson (10-0-0) vs Edwin Rodriguez (12-11-3)
Dennis Thompson puts his unbeaten record on the line against experienced campaigner Edwin Rodriguez, who has shared the ring with plenty of prospects before.
Juanma Lopez De Jesus (5-0-0) vs Alberto Motos (6-2-0)
Unbeaten youngster Juanma Lopez De Jesus takes on Spain’s Alberto Motos in another fight designed to test a promising prospect without making life easy.
Final Thoughts
The main event is good enough on its own, but the strength of the undercard makes this one of the better fight nights of the summer. Zayas and Ennis have genuine questions to answer, Whittaker gets a huge opportunity in America, Vargas continues his rise, and Tucker faces the sort of opponent that could push him into world title conversations. That’s a pretty solid way to spend a Saturday night.
