Ringside Boxing Report: Rob Doody vs. Jason Nesbitt

ByJane Warburton 19/07/200912/05/2013

It was a typical English summer evening on Friday; rain, rain and more rain! But it didn’t dampen the spirit of fans enjoying an evening of boxing at Wolverhampton Civic Hall in the West Midlands.

PJ Rowson and Errol Johnson of First Team Promotions hosted a fight card which would see action from five bouts.

Rob Doody (Tipton) v Jason Nesbitt (Birmingham)
6 Round Light Welterweight Contest

There was good support for Doody, who used long-reaching left and rights to the head of Nesbitt.
At the end of round four, he lands two shots after being told to break. The second shot landed cleanly and he’s given a stern warning by referee Rob Chalmers.

It’s a better round five for Doody, who goes on to win on points, 60-54, and improves to 3 wins, no losses.

This was Nesbitt’s 100th contest and he was awarded a certificate by BBBofC officials to mark the occasion.

Jamie Ball (Coseley) v Ernie Smith (Stourport)
4 Round Middleweight Contest

For me personally , I felt Ball gave a more mature performance than usual and that this was the best I’ve seen of him.

Southpaw ‘Bully’ landed a solid left followed moments later by a solid right which rocks back the head of ‘Gypsy Boy’ Smith in the opening round. He finished the frame with a clubbing left to the side of the jaw.

Ball goes on to win on points, 40-36, and improves to 7 wins (1 by KO), no losses.

Chris Male (Dudley) v Steve Gethin (Walsall)
4 Round Super Featherweight Contest

Male kept up a good work-rate against experienced Gethin to secure a points win, 40-36, and his record now stands at 6 wins, no losses.

Troy James (Coventry) v Anthony Hanna (Birmingham)
4 Round Super Featherweight Contest

‘Terrifying’ Troy James ‘wobbles‘ experienced spanner Hanna in the fourth and last round, further subjecting him to a barrage of shots and Hanna is stopped before the end of the frame.
James wins by TKO round four and improves to 3 wins (1 by KO), 1 draw and no losses.

Chris Truman (Birmingham) v Karl Taylor (Birmingham)
4 Round Welterweight Contest

This was ‘The Trumanator’s’ pro-debut against veteran Taylors 150th contest. There was big crowd support for the young Birmingham man who starts off well against tough and experienced Taylor.

Taylor sustains a cut to the left brow in round two. There’s some good left and right shots to the head of Taylor but round three sees Truman’s corner urging him to go for the body. A good testing bout for the debutant, who wins on points, 40-36, to notch up his first victory.

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]

  • Why was Usyk so bad? 27/05/2026
What was the major factor for Usyk to perform so poorly against Rico? Rico better than expected, skilled kick boxer, huge size, awkward style, surprise element? Age of Usyk finally showing up? Weight Usyk was too heavy? Usyk not taking the fight seriously? Ukraine war on his mind? 4 posts - 4 participants Read full topic […]

Jai Opetaia Says Boxing Rewards Talk More Than Skill This has long been a thought of mine, but of course it’s always refreshing when an actual boxer says it. It could be speculated that at some point Jai could follow t […]
