Munguía outpoints Zon to retain WBA Super Middleweight World Title – World Boxing Association

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, provided the setting for a true test of mettle at the elite level of the 168-pound division. After a demanding 12-round battle, Mexican champion Jaime Munguía successfully defended his World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Middleweight World Title, earning a unanimous decision victory over tough Russian challenger Nikita Zon.

Munguía’s consistency in setting the pace, effective body punching, and relentless offensive output proved to be the deciding factors in convincing all three ringside judges, who scored the bout 117-111, 117-111, and 116-112 in favor of the defending champion.

From the opening bell, Munguía made his intentions clear, taking control of the center of the ring, steadily cutting off the distance, and looking to break through his opponent’s guard with four- and five-punch combinations. However, Nikita Zon showed why he entered the fight as a dangerous, undefeated challenger. He stood his ground behind a tight guard, absorbed the punishment, and used his reach to fire back with sharp straight punches that repeatedly tested Munguía’s defense.

As the fight progressed into the championship rounds, the Mexican champion’s experience and pedigree on the world stage began to make the difference. Munguía stepped up his attack to the body, repeatedly connecting with his trademark short left hook to the liver. The sustained punishment gradually took a toll on Zon’s mobility, allowing the Tijuana native to take control of the decisive rounds through his clear superiority in close-range exchanges.

With this hard-fought victory in Saudi Arabia, under the spotlight of Riyadh Season, Jaime Munguía retains the prestigious WBA black-and-gold belt at 168 pounds, further cementing his status as one of the division’s leading figures.
