Last night, at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, England, Barry Hearn of Matchroom Sports promoted a fightnight which headlined two title bouts.

Surrey-based Polish boxer Albert Sosnowski won the European Heavyweight title by a unanimous points decision, defeating Italy’s Paolo Vidoz.

The 30 year old Sosnowski is on the form of his career, coming into the bout having defeated former world title challenger and British champion Danny Williams and drawn with European Union titlist Francesco Pianeta.

39 year old Vidoz has now gone 1-3 over his last four bouts with all three of the losses in European title fights.

In the chief support bout, Carl Dilks of Liverpool faced Charles Adamu of Ghana for the vacant Commonwealth Super Middleweight title.

Dilks – who can have a tendancy to start slowly – got off to a decent start against the Ghanaian. Using the long-reaching left jab, Dilksy looked confident and had the slightly better first round. But it starts to get a bit messy in round two and both men are called together to ‘clean it up’.

Adamu throws some wild swinging shots while Dilks concentrates on the jab. Neither man is overly busy but Dilks looks the more focussed and a tidier boxer while Adamu is ‘sloppy’.

Dilks gets a warning for hitting after a break in round six but seconds later catches Adamu with a right that seems to unbalance the Ghanaian slightly. “Dilksy! Dilksy!” the Liverpool fans chant from the balcony.

Dilks dominates from centre of ring in round seven but there are few punches landing. Sky Sports Statistics reveal that Dilks has landed 22 jabs so far as opposed to Adamu’s 6.

Round eight was a better frame for Adamu, who had upped the work-rate. Dilks finishes the round sustaining a cut to the right cheek but has a better round nine.

Sky Sports Stats reveal that Dilks has the better success rate landing 53 of 228 punches (23%) while Adamu has landed 40 of 463 (8%).

In the first minute of round ten – Dilks whips out a decent left which lands to the head of Adamu, causing him to stagger backwards off-balance. He doesn’t fall, but Referee Parish calls time momentarily. Dilks lands a decent right – midway through the eleventh while Adamu is backed on the ropes but it wasn’t a great round for the Liverpudlian.

The twelfth and final round sees Adamu continuing with wildly swinging shots. He gets a stern warning from the Referee for (I believe) going in with the head.

Sky Stats reveal that Dilks had the better success rate (22%) landing 73 of 320 punches, while Adamu landed 56 of 562 (9%).

Amazingly, Adamu wins by split decision on scores of 116-113; 113-115; 115-114 and is the new Commonwealth Champion. Many ringside watchers – including Sky Sports Presenters – felt that Dilks had won.

Also on the bill, 41 year old ex-European and British cruiserweight champ Terry Dunstan outpointed Micky Steeds over six rounds at heavyweight while former British super bantam kingpin Matthew Marsh did the same against Marc Callaghan at featherweight.

European Union light welter champ Giuseppe Lauri of Italy returned to the UK for the first time in three years, pounding out a six round points verdict over Hungarian veteran Janos Petrovics in a non-title affair at welterweight and towering Droylsden middleweight prospect Prince Arron was held to a draw by iron-chinned Brummie Max Maxwell over six frames.

There were two successful four round pro debuts on the bill as light welter Chris Evangelou got a points win against Kristian Laight and super middle Sam Smart managed the same result against Duncan Cottier.
