Ringside Boxing Report: Lenny Daws vs. Jason Cook

Friday night, at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, Matchroom Sports hosted a fightnight which would see Lightening Lenny Daws make the first defence of his British Light Welterweight Title as he faced Welshman – Jason Cook.

Cook goes for it straight from the bell and gets off to a fast start against Daws. With just over a minute of the first remaining – Cook lands a ‘big left hook’ to the head of the Champion who’s legs ‘wobble’ and he is forced to cover up. Daws is under pressure on the ropes but keeps upright.

It’s a good start for ‘Cookie’ with Daws struggling to settle in.

Cook is fired up and keeps up a busy work-rate. Daws sustains a cut to the left cheek during the second round. Cooks punches continue to ‘fly out’ and he finds success with the right in the third frame. Daws starts to settle in. By the end of the sixth Sky Statistics reveal that Cook has landed 80 of 327 punches thrown (24% success) as opposed to 62 of 287 (21%).

Cookie drops his gloves then grins as Daws gets through with a few head shots in the seventh. Daws gains in confidence as the fight progresses. Cook – though not as fast – remains focussed.

It’s a messy round eleven with Daws hanging on to Cooks arm and the Welshman shimmys and grins as if to say ‘You’re not hurting me’.

Cook laughs as he lands sitting down on the canvas from a bungling over in the twelfth and Daws is warned for holding on. Cook is forced to cover up as a body-shot strays low then moments later is bundled on to the canvas as he’s driven into the corner.

Sky Stats reveal that Daws has landed 165 of 690 punches (23%) while Cook has landed 113 of 537 (21%)

The contest is deemed a draw with Daws retaining the Title ( 155-114; 114-115; 114-114)

Steve Williams (Liverpool) v Michael Grant (Tottenham)
Vacant English Light-Welterweight Title

Williams secured a unanimous points victory over Grant to take the Title. He adds to his perfect record of 9 wins (3 by KO) while Grant drops to 12 wins (1 by KO) 2 losses (1 by KO) and 1 draw.

Gregorsz Proksa (Poland) v Tyan Booth (Nottingham/ Sheffield)
European Union Middleweight Title

Polish Boxer – ‘Super G’ proved too much for Ingle Boxer – Booth – scoring a fifth round TKO to take the title. Proksa’s record now stands at an impressive 20 wins (13 by KO) and no losses while Booth drops to 11 wins (2 by KO) 6 losses (2 by KO) and 1 draw

The European Contenders had certainly ‘come to fight’ and gave all the British boxers a testing time.

Results as follows:

Ben Jones (Crawley) v James Ancliff (Aberdeen)
6 x 3 Featherweight Contest

Jones forced a stoppage when Ancliff sustained a nasty cut to the left brow.

Jones wins by TKO Round two and improves to 9 wins (3 by KO) 1 loss (1 by KO) 1 draw while Ancliff drops to 6 wins (1 by KO) 11 losses (3 by KO) 1 draw.

Greaves drops to 2 wins (1 by KO) 44 losses (7 by KO)

After a four year break from boxing – Bowen came back to scrape a narrow points win over experienced Tucker 39-38

Stuart Hall (Darlington) v Richard Szebeledi (Hungary)

Szebeledi drops to 4 wins 8 losses (3 by KO)

Luke ‘Freddie’ Turner (Canning Town) v James Nesbitt (Birmingham)
4 x 3 Light Middleweight Contest

Nesbitt drops to 7 wins (5 by KO) 102 losses (11 by KO) and 2 draws

4 Round Featherweight Contest
