Ringside Boxing Report: Scott Quigg vs. Andrey Kostin

It was a packed Castle Leisure Centre in Bury, England, on Saturday night for the Hatton Promotions fight-night. The fight-card billed as ‘Back Home’ was the first boxing event in Bury since its ban in 1997 and – judging by the support – surely won’t be the last event there!

But it was a quick night’s work for headliner – and local boxer – Scott Quigg, who’s walk to the Leisure Centre from his front door probably took as long as his first round demolition over Russian opponent Andrey Kostin!

Confident and strong-looking Quigg landed a solid uppercut which sees Kostin fall to the canvas. He takes the count but -looking unsteady – the crowd sensed it would be an early finish and Quigg duly obliged!

After another head-shot, Kostin goes down. As he rises for the count he almost stumbles forward on Referee Howard Foster and was clearly unable to continue.

Quigg wins by first round KO and improves to an 18 win (12 by KO) record with no losses, while Kostin drops to 20 wins (6 by KO) and 15 losses (2 by KO).

There was also some nice under-card action on the Bury Bill.

Tom Doran (Connah’s Quay) v Jon Musgrave (Barnsley)
6 x 2 Light Middleweight Contest

A good win for ‘Dazzlin’ Doran as he faced Yorkshireman Musgrave. Musgrave hit the canvas heavily inside the first round and – taking a few head-punches during the contest – there was always the sense that he could go down again.

But Musgrave ‘dug-in’ and managed to get through with a few shots of his own. Doran though – for me – provided some nice boxing, incorporating some nifty little dips and dodges.

The Welsh-boxer secured a good points victory (60-53) and improves to 6 wins and no losses. Musgrave drops to 7 wins and 9 losses.

Kieran Maher (Hattersley) v Aaron Fox (Westbury, Wiltshire)
6 x 2 Light Welterweight Contest

Fox had a scared expression on his face as he came out to meet Maher! After a number of head-shots, the Wiltshire-man took a big blow to the nose in the fourth which stunned him momentarily and Referee John Latham jumped in to stop the contest – much to Fox’s disagreement!

Maher improves to 6 wins (2 by KO) and no losses, while Fox drops to 0 wins, 3 losses (2 by KO) and 1 draw.

Graeme ‘Dezzie’ Higginson (Blackburn) v Carl Allen (Wolverhampton)
4 x 3 Lightweight Contest

Higginson faced tough veteran Allen in this four rounder which sees Allen ‘driving-in’ some heavy uppercuts. Higginson secures the points win though (40-37) and improves to 11 wins (3 by KO), 8 losses (3 by KO) and 1 draw. Allen drops to 18 wins (5 by KO), 90 losses (15 by KO) and 7 draws.

Jack Perry (Derby) v Danny Dontchev (Tooting)
6 x 2 Light Welterweight Contest

Ingle boxer Perry faced entertaining Bulgarian-born Londoner, Dontchev. Perry kept focussed, predominantly landing left and rights to the head of his experienced opponent to secure a 59-56 points win.

Perry improves to 12 wins (2 by KO), no losses and 1 draw, while Dontchev drops to 2 wins (1 by KO) and 20 losses (7 by KO).
