Bank Holiday weekend in the UK – and what could be nicer than a Sunday afternoon at the boxing! Steve Wood / VIP Promotions hosted a five card bill at the Copley Sports Centre in Stalybridge, Manchester, England yesterday which headlined local man Jon Kays.

A sunny day and a great atmosphere with lots of people enjoying an afternoon of local boxing talent!

Terry Flannigan (Manchester) v Csaba Toth (Hungary)
4 Round Welterweight Contest

Flannigan had hardly worked up a sweat when he floored Hungarian Toth inside the opening first round. Flanningan wins by first round TKO and improves to 6 wins (2 by KO) and no losses while Toth drops to 3 wins (2 by KO) and 4 losses (3 by KO).

Austin Hornsby (Manchester) v Matt Seawright (Tamworth)
6 Round Welterweight Contest

There was big support for Hornsby who – on his second outing – had a tough test against experienced Seawright. Round five and Seawright slips and is sent diving through the ropes – ending up on the floor! The poor guy must have hurt himself but picked himself straight up and back on the canvas.

He did very well to come back. As if that wasn’t bad enough – the Midlands man sustained a nasty cut to the left brow in the sixth and final round. Popular Hornsby gets the points win to secure his second pro win on points (59-55), while Seawright drops to 3 wins, 29 losses (8 by KO) and 1 draw.

[The next contest was delayed a few minutes while Doctors stitched Seawrights’ brow]

Warren Tansey (Middleton) v Ally Morrison (Cumbria)
4 Round Middleweight Contest

Tansey – another well-supported local boxer – scored a first round TKO over Morrison. Under pressure, Morrison saw the fight stopped by Referee Mark Lyson in the opener.

Tansey improves to 3 wins (3 by KO) and 1 loss, while Morrison drops to 2 wins, 4 losses (2 by KO) and 2 draws.

Blain Younis (Ashton-under-Lyne) v Ignac Kassai (Hungary)
4 Round Super-Bantamweight

Younis secures his second points win (40-36) over Hungarian Kassai. Kasai drops to 1 win (1 by KO), 9 losses (3 by KO) and 2 draws.

Jon Kays (Ashton-under-Lyne) v Yordan Vasilev (Bulgaria)
8 Round Super-Featherweight Contest

Headliner – Jon ‘2 Smokes’ Kays – gave a confident performance over red and blonde haired Vasilev. The Mancunian started off busy in this eight rounder landing some solid body punches and getting little back from the defensive Bulgarian.

Kays keeps up the pressure throughout the contest concentrating on hard-hitting body shots. The Bulgarian’s work-rate is lacking but a decent head-shot catches Kays in the seventh and Vasilev seems to ‘wake-up’! He begins to show-boat – much to the disapproval of the Manchester crowd.

Round eight and Vasilev looks to have been ‘saving’ himself for the final frame. He has his busiest round but it is too little too late and Kays gets the points win 80-72. Kays improves to 12 wins (3 by KO) and 1 loss while Vasilev drops to 6 wins (1 by KO), 16 losses (6 by KO) and 2 draws.
