Friday night, at Bowlers Exhibition Centre, Manchester, Ovill ‘The Upsetter’ McKenzie retained his Commonwealth Light Heavyweight Title by TKO over popular Liverpool Boxer – Tony Dodson.

The Derby man came out ‘fired up’ – rushing out of his corner and immediately looking to land a ‘bomb’ with the right. Mckenzie lands a heavy right in the opening seconds of the third round then less than a minute later he lands more clubbing rights and ‘Warrior’ Dodson found himself on the canvas. He makes the count but is immediately under pressure from some huge bombing shots. Dodson is reeling on the ropes when Referee Victor Loughlin steps in to stop the contest.
McKenzie improves to 20 wins (9 by KO) 11 losses (2 by KO)

Dodson drops to 28 wins (14 by KO) 7 losses (5 by KO) and 1 draw

Also on the VIP Promotions / Frank Warren co-hosted event, Ronnie Heffron of Oldham impressed again when he scored a knockdown of Romanian – Ionut Trandafir Ilie in the fifth round of their scheduled eight-round Welterweight Contest. Llie had taken a battering from some cringe-worthy shots to both head and body since the opener and finally dropped to a knee mid-way through the fifth from a crippling left to the body – and stayed on one knee – unable to make the count.

Heffron improves to 9 wins (5 by KO) while Ilie drops to 14 wins (2 by KO) 12 losses (4 by KO) and 1 draw.

Gary Davies (St. Helens) v Ian Bailey (Slough)
4 x 3 Bantamweight Contest

Davies was made to work hard on this – his comeback fight. He takes a decent punch in the opener which he clearly ‘felt’ – then gets a cut to the left brow from an accidental clash of heads in the third. Bailey also sustains a cut in the fourth and final round. Davies gets the points win 39-38 and improves to 11 wins (8 by KO) 4 losses (3 by KO) and 1 draw.

While Bailey drops to 7 wins 10 losses (2 by KO).

Courtney Fry (Liverpool) v Jody Meikle (Scunthorpe)
4 x 3 Light Heavyweight Contest

A messy contest between these two – which sees Fry get the points win 40-37.
Fry improves to 16 wins (6 by KO) 3 losses (1 by KO) while Meikle drops to 1 win 15 losses (1 by KO)

Jamie Brown (Middleton) v Rick Boulter (Lincoln)
4 x 3 Light Middleweight Contest

A decent match-up between these two and it’s a big round four for Brown who gets the points win against bloody-nosed Boulter.

Brown notches up his second pro win of two, while Boulter drops to 1 win 16 losses (2 by KO) and 3 draws.

Rick Godding (Bolton) v Dee Mitchell (Birmingham)
6 x 3 Welterweight Contest

Godding scores a fourth round TKO over Mitchell.

He improves to 15 wins (2 by KO) while Mitchell drops to 9 wins (2 by KO) 19 losses (2 by KO) and 1 draw.

Mark Evans (Holyhead, Wales) v Kristian Laight (Nuneaton)
4 x 3 Super Featherweight Contest

Evans faced last minute opponent – experienced Laight in this four-rounder. Laight – who has become very motivated recently – was surprisingly down on the canvas in the second frame (much to his surprise too!) He recovered immediately and Evans went on to get the points win 40-36 . He improves to 4 wins no losses, while Laight’s record now stands at 6 wins 112 losses (4 by KO) and 6 draws.

Terry Flannigan (Manchester) v Scott Moises (Aylsham, Norfolk)
6 x 3 Featherweight Contest

After a steady contest, both men pick up the pace in the sixth and final round and with less than half a minute remaining – Flannigan lands a peach of a right which sends Moises to the canvas. The Norfolk man jumps back up to finish the fight and Flannigan gets the points win 60-53

Flannigan improves to 12 wins (4 by KO) while Moises drops to 3 wins (2 by KO) 4 losses.

Chris Johnson (Chorley) v Jay Morris (Newport, Isle of Wight)
4 x 3 Welterweight Contest

A closely fought contest sees Johnson get the points win 39-38. He improves to 15 wins (8 by KO) 3 losses (2 by KO) while Morris drops to 15 wins (4 by KO) 23 losses (11 by KO) 3 draws.

Daniel Szynkiewicz (Debutant) (Manchester via Poland) v Andrew ‘Paddy’ Patterson (Birmingham)
4 x 3 Light Middleweight Contest

Debutant Szynkiewicz had a tought first outing against experienced Patterson. It’s a confident start from the debutant, but ‘Paddy’ finds his feet in the third round and Szynkiewicz is under pressure – his nose bloody. It’s been a good round three for Patterson. Szynkiewicz has to stop to retrieve his gumshield a couple of times and Szynkiewicz gets the points win 40-37.

Patterson’s record now stands at 4 wins (4 by KO) 26 losses (4 by KO) and 3 draws.

Warren Tansey (Middleton) v Emmanuel Moussinga (Birmingham via Cameroon)
6 x 3 Super Middleweight Contest

Tansey gets the points win 60-55
Tansey improves to 8 wins (3 by KO) and 1 loss, while Moussinga drops to no wins 2 losses.
