David Barnes’s bid to win an eight-rounder over New Yorker – ‘Vicious’ Vivian Harris, ended sadly last night – when the Manchester man suffered a bad cut through the left brow from an accidental clash of heads in the fifth round.
The eight round Welterweight contest was the headliner of the Dave Coldwell promoted afternoon event at DeVere Whites Hotel, Reebok Stadium, Bolton.

Round one sees both men tapping at each other – with Barnes ‘flicking out’ the right to touch Harris’s left glove. Encircling the ring like two cats about to scrap – both boxers wait for the other to make a move! It seemed to take ages before any contact was made – and it was brief! They resume the same stance and Barnes ‘goes in’ at the end of the round. Harris gestures to his forehead – but the bell signals the end of a ‘twitchy’ opening round. The following rounds were much the same and the Bolton crowd were restless but it was the fifth that ended the fight. Both men go in together and Barnes immediately jumps back with blood flowing from a bad vertical cut through his left brow. Referee Michael Alexander takes Barnes straight across to the ringside Doctor and the fight was stopped. A disappointed Barnes kicked the canvas in fury !
The scorecard gave it a 48-48 score and the contest was declared a Technical Draw.
Barnes’s record now stands at 25 wins (11 by KO) 2 losses (1 by KO) and 2 draws, while Harris’s record stands at 29 wins (19 by KO) 7 losses (5 by KO) and 2 draws.
Hosea Burton (Manchester) v Viktor Tzonev (Gabrovo, Bulgaria)

Debutant and former ABA Middleweight Champ – Hosea Burton of Manchester, proved impressive – by scoring a first round TKO over Bulgarian opponent Viktor Tzonev.
Hosea ‘The Hammer’ looked very confident and immediately gets to work in round one with long reaching left and rights keeping the Bulgarian on the back foot.
A big sweeping right sees Tzonev on the canvas after two minutes and thirty seconds of the opening round. He is counted out and given attention by ringside paramedics but recovers for the decision.
Tzonev’s record drops to 1 win 4 losses (1 by KO)
Matthew Clarkson (Preston) v Sam Couzens (Titchfield)
6 x 3 Light Heavyweight Contest
Clarkson won by fifth round TKO. He improves to 6 wins (1 by KO) and 1 draw, while Couzens drops to 8 wins (2 by KO) 8 losses (5 by KO)
Mick Hall (Preston) v Tomasz Mazurkiewicz (Manchester via Poland)
4 x 3 Middleweight Contest
Hall secured a points win 40-36 and improves to 7 wins (1 by KO) while Mazurkiewicz drops to 5 wins (1 by KO) 4 losses and 2 draws.
Kurt Grieve (Bolton) v Jason Nesbitt (Birmingham)
4 x 3 Welterweight Contest
Debutant Grieve notched up his first win on points 40-35 after experienced Nesbitt was on the canvas in the opening round.
Nesbitts record now stands at 9 wins (6 by KO) 141 losses (12 by KO) and 3 draws
Chris Jenkinson (Bolton) v William Warburton (Atherton)

‘Twinny’ Jenkinson scored a points win 39-38 over Warburton and improves to 1 win 1 loss and 1 draw.
Warburton drops to 5 wins 28 losses (2 by KO) and 2 draws.
