British Welterweight Championship Weigh-in From Boxing Mad Preston

ByJane Warburton 24/10/200512/05/2013

Sports Network held the weigh-in today for tomorrow’s big card from Preston, England’ Guild Hall where Michael Jennings will seek to defend his British Welterweight Championship belt from the worst intentions of hardened Welsh battler Bradley Pryce. The main event will be televised live in the UK on terrestrial television giant ITV starting at 9PM along with a contest featuring London’s undefeated super feather sensation Kevin Mitchell against the dangerously awkward Daniel Thorpe. Saddoboxing was at the weigh-in at Preston to produce the following report and exclusive photo gallery.

The main event fighters, Michael Jennings and Bradley Pryce both weighed in under the division limit with the champion scaling 10 st 6.5 (146.5 lbs) and the Welsh challenger topping out at 10 st 5 (145lbs). The “Chorley Lurcher” was his usual carefree self, smiling and confident while Pryce carried himself with the quiet determination that has seen him thru several tough bouts that he was not expected to win.

London starlet Kevin Mitchell turned up with a different appearance than usual, his spiky razor cut replaced with collar length hair but the super feather was as serious as ever, eyeing his opponent Daniel Thorpe with a level gaze. Mitchell weighed-in at 9 st 5 (131lbs) while Thorpe, a gloved up whirling dervish in the ring, was measured slightly heavier at 9 st 5.5 (131.5lbs). Afterwards, Mitchell remarked that despite what he felt was a rusty most recent performance, he was very proud to have been named Young Boxer of the Year in Britain and that he regarded Thorpe as a “switchy trixter” who could be very difficult in the ring but that he expected to knock out the veteran early.

Former light middleweight Lonsdale Belt winner Ryan Rhodes, now campaigning a class higher, hit the scales at 11 st 7.5 (161.5lbs) while his multi divisioned and highly seasoned rival Hussein Osman scaled 11 st 5 (159lbs).

One of Manchester’s more accomplished boxers, light middle Thomas McDonagh steadied the beam at 11 st 1.5 (155.5lbs) while his dance partner Dean Walker carried a bit more mass at 11st 3.5 (157.5lbs).

Liverpool’s promising Derry Matthews was very relaxed and confident as he weighed-in at 8 st 13 (125lbs) and opponent Federic Bonafai was recorded as a full 9 stone (126lbs) after arriving to the weigh-in late due to his manager/trainer missing a flight from France.

The weigh-in for Ojay Abrahams and Ricardo Samms’ super middleweight contest was postponed until tomorrow
