Froch Defends British And Commonwealth Boxing Crowns In Thriller

ByRicky Jones 27/05/2006

Gary Woolcombe Stops Gilbert Eastman On Undercard

Brian Magee climbed off the deck in the first round of his challenge to British and Commonwealth Super Middleweight Champion Carl Froch last night on a Maloney Promotion at York Hall in London but the Irishman was gunned down in the eleventh by a ripping uppercut from the champion. Froch claimed to have hurt his hand in depositing Magee in the initial frame and soon found himself pushed to the wall by the Belfast southpaw. Forced into the unaccustomed position of fighting off the backfoot, Froch engaged the wilfull Magee in a contentious fight of the year type contest until a perfect uppercut smashed thru the Ulsterman’s defenses and ended Magee’s evening at 1:26 of the eleventh round.

On the undercard, light middle Gary Woolcombe remained undefeated by stopping Gilbert Eastman in the seventh to win the British Southern Area title, ex-European Super Feather titlist Tontcho Tontchev outpointed durable Jon Honney at lightweight, light welter Gary Reid pulled off an upset by finishing Leo O’Reilly in the second and in a battle of unbeaten super middles, Steve Ede stopped Jake Guntert in the second round. Also racking up wins were Kreshnick Qato, Wayne Goddard and Ajose Olusegun.
