Boxing Round By Round: Ronald Hearns – Hector Hernandez

ByAdam Matson 03/07/200603/07/2006

There were a raft of hot prospects in action on Saturday night’s Showtime telecast from the Little River Casino in Manistee, Michigan, in particular Ronald “Hitman” Hearns who took on Hector Hernandez.

Round 1
The first of eight scheduled rounds between these middleweight prospects starts out with Hearns firing two quick jabs in the center of the ring. Hearns is very lengthy, Hernandez comes inside swinging very wildly, landing a couple shots. He just wants to brawl. Hearns is being backed up by Hernandez and both are swinging wildly. Hernandez is swinging wildly side to side, while Hearns is very loopy over the top. Hearns is fighting on the inside, and it is an absolute free swinging brawl. Hearns knocks Hernandez down on a punch that appeared to be on the break. Hernandez is upset and unfazed and comes back in only to get clocked with a left hand that buckles Hernandez, Hernandez clinches and the two go to the ground. Very exciting round.

Round 2
Hearns comes out jabbing, and lands a pair of very big straight right hands that rock Hernandez. Hearns is very off balance. Hernandez is a little more timid now that he has tasted the power of Hearns and Hearns is fighting at a distance behind the jab. Hernandez has no jab, he just fires with a straight right to get inside and ends up missing and getting hit some more. Hearns abandons his jab once again and this inside fighting is allowing Hernandez to land with very wide and loopy hooks. Hearns is winning the fight almost undoubtedly, but he is brawling and that is giving Hernandez a glimmer of hope. There is no reason to fight on the inside.

Round 3
You can almost be assured that Hearns got scolded in between rounds. Hearns is fighting behind a jab a little bit more in the early going. Hernandez, having already felt the straight right hand of Hernandez, seems to be content on waiting for Hearns to bring the inside fight to him. This is almost a resting round for both, not much action through two minutes. Hearns catches Hernandez backing straight up with a straight left hand with about thirty seconds left in the round. Hernandez hasn’t landed much of anything this round. Hearns looks very off balance. The round closes with a roar from the crowd.

Round 4
The round starts out with Hearns jabbing in the center of the ring and loading up on the straight right hand.&n! bsp; Hernandez is fighting in spots now, and is nowhere near as persistent as he was in the opening two rounds. Hearns is fighting begin the jab really well now and although he looks open for a counter on the straight right, he is still dominating this fight. Hearns tags Hernandez with an extended straight right and Hernandez seems out on his feet as the round closes.

Round 5
Hearns’ starts the round by tripling up on his jab and Hernandez responds by missing with a wide hook. He is being outclassed right now. Hearns lands another straight right halfway through the round as Hernandez is leading with his head, only hoping to land that one big shot to put Hearns away. Hearns is just overwhelming at this point, as he knocks Hernandez down for the second time in the fight with a left hook the body. Hernandez looks out of it. He gets up on shaky legs and attempts to fights the remaining 12 seconds, only to be knocked down yet ! again. He is on very shaky legs. This fight needs to be st opped. Hernandez collapses after the round by the referee continues to let this fight go on.

Round 6
Hernandez comes out and is immediately nailed on the ropes with a barrage of hooks. This round was over before it started. Very unfortunate that this fight was allowed to continue.
