Lucas Browne Stops Richard Towers In The Fifth

ByJane Warburton 03/11/2013

Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing presented another top night of boxing action last night at the Hull Ice Arena.

Australian – Lucas Browne stopped Richard Towers of Sheffield in the fifth round of their Commonwealth Heavyweight title final eliminator.

Taller Towers kept Browne at bay with his long-reaching jab in round one, but Browne was never afraid to get stuck in and go in close to his towering opponent. Towers just looked like he needed a bit more confidence to ‘go for it’ while his Aussie opponent was happy to take risks. Browne sustained a cut to the right brow by the end of the second round.

A short right hook at the end of the third frame saw Towers’ legs turn to jelly and he is literally saved by the bell. But the end came in the fifth round when Browne piled on the pressure forcing Towers bent backwards over the ropes. The Sheffield man looked dazed and confused. He takes the count but cannot walk steadily towards Referee Steve Gray who had no choice but to stop the fight.

Josh Warrington of Leeds became the new Commonwealth Featherweight Champion – stopping local man Samir Mouneimne in round twelve.

After a steady start, Warrington began to settle in to the contest and had a good round five – with more action and accurate landing coming from the Leeds man.

Another great round seven for Warrington who has his opponent in trouble. There is a lot of pressure coming from Warrington and Mouneimne sustains a nick to the right brow and a nick on the left brow by the end of the tenth.

Mouneimne was on the back-foot in round twelve and Warrington landed a number of head-shots while Mouneimne was forced against the ropes. Referee Howard Foster jumped in to stop the contest.

All the Judges scorecards were in favour of Warrington at that point.

Tommy Coyle of Hull won the vacant IBF International Lightweight Title – stopping John Simpson of Greenock, Scotland, in the seventh round.

Simpson sustained a cut to the right eye in round two (from a head-clash). A right uppercut almost on the bell sees Simpson on the canvas but he jumps straight back up as the bell signals the end of the round. Simpson has a better round four.

Mid-way through the seventh and a right to the temple sends Simpson to the canvas but again he jumps straight back up. Half a minute later he is down again from a right punch and counted but Referee Phil Edwards waved the contest off.

Luke Campbell, MBE, scored a fifth round stoppage of Lee Connelly of Killamarsh, Derbyshire, in their six round Lightweight Contest. Hull-born Campbell notches up his third pro-win of three by KO.

Curtis Woodhouse of Driffield scored a points victory (59-54) over Lewis van Poetsch of Lydney, Gloucestershire in their six round Welterweight Contest.

With a minute of the second round remaining, Woodhouse sustained a cut to the left brow from a nice right-hand. Round four sees Poetsch’s face bloody from a nose injury and he starts to look uncomfortable in the fifth round. With less than a minute of the fifth remaining, a body-shot sends Poetsch to the canvas. Fighting resumes and it goes to points in favour of Woodhouse.

And, Leicester’s Rendall Munroe continued his comeback at Lightweight – scoring a comfortable points victory (60-55) over experienced Pavels Senkovs of Mansfield.
