WBA Mourns Passing Of Boxing Promoter Cedric Kusher

The WBA Fedecaribe welterweight title will be disputed on Saturday, February 7, at the Coliseo Guillermo Angulo of Carolina, Puerto Rico, when Rashidi Ellis and Víctor González enter the ring.

The fight will have local officials and the WBA supervisor will be Luvi Callejas.

North America’s Ellis, with an undefeated record in 13 fights with 10 KO´s will face the Colombian Gonzalez, whose record is 12-9, with 11 KO´s.

Other regional title fights were also approved.

The first will be for the Fedelatin super featherweight vacant title between Juan Huertas (8-1, 7 KO’s) and Eder Espítia (9-1-3, 7 KO’s), in February.

While in March, there will be two fights; the first a Fedecaribe super lightweight clash between the Venezuelan Kelly Figueroa (7-2-3, 2 KO’s) against the Panamanian Isaís Valencia (5-3, 1 KO’s), and the other bout will be for the super flyweight scrap between Israel Hidrogo (10-4-1, 2 KO’s) and Gilberto Pedroza (11-3-2, 6 KO’s).

The World Boxing Association family deeply mourns the passing of promoter Cedric Kushner, and extends its words of sympathy to family and friends.
Kushner, born in South Africa, was one of the greatest boxing promoters in the late 90’s on American TV, especially in the Heavyweights.

He was the promoter of Hasim Rahman, who defeated Lennox Lewis. He worked with Shane Mosley, Joel Casamayor and Shannon Briggs among other boxing figures.

During a courtesy visit to the journal Marca, in Spain, by the WBA President, Gilberto Mendoza and Vice President Gilberto Jesús Mendoza, made it clear that they are working in towards spreading boxing to all continents.

Both directors recalled that the WBA is focused on the growth of boxing in all the continents with regional titles.

President Mendoza spoke with a Spanish journal about meetings and projects of Alliance between the WBA, WBC and IBF: “the cooperative relationship between the organizations is unique. We are trying to create tournaments where the champions of each organization compete to have the unique champion as we want”.

He pointed out that “cooperation is very important in pursue of a future with greater clarity for professional boxing”.

Mendoza also referred to the attempt of the International Amateur Boxing Association to control the rental boxing. “The threat is making us get together. AIBA comes with strength, it manages the national federations, receives money from them, from their Governments and also organize the Olympic Games, which is essential for the athletes” he said to the Spanish press.

On his part, Gilberto Jesús Mendoza referred to a possible clash between WBA/WBC unified champion Floyd Mayweather and WBO champion Manny Pacquiao, and reminded that it would be the first attempt of the Filipino to win the pioneer organization championship belt:

“The public needs Mayweather-Pacquiao. The North American is running out of opponents and it seems he has two last bouts in his career”, Mendoza said to the editor the journal.
