Boxing Info: Olusegun Steps In For Power June 15 In London

ByBoxing Press 26/05/2007

Due to the withdrawal of Martin Power from his proposed clash with Jason Booth at Crystal Palace on June 15; British fight fans have been rewarded with a thriller as Ajose Olusegun 19-0 (10) steps up to fight the talented Gary Reid 13-16-1 (8) for the vacant Commonwealth light welterweight title.

Olusegun, 27, has been waiting for 18 months for a title shot and the British based Nigerian must be commended for his patience during this trying period that saw so many fighters agree to get into the ring with him, only to withdraw closer to the fight.

Stoke on Trent based Reid, 34, is considered by many to be boxing’s Cinderella man having caused more upsets than any other Brit.

Reid has been awaiting an opportunity such as this to crown his past achievements and take the title he deserves. Reid is eager to add to his highly impressive recent record that has seen him gain all three of his victories in the past 12 months by way of knockout.

“I see myself as the Cinderella man of boxing,” Reid said. “All my career I have wanted to fight for a major title and this is my opportunity.”

“I have no fear of Ajose and I am getting into that ring to knock him out.”

The top-of-the-bill is supported by an action packed card headed by the reappearance of Tshifhiwa Munyai, the undefeated Commonwealth bantamweight champion.

Also present will be John McDermott, the highly regarded heavyweight who attempts to increase his already impressive record of 14 stoppages from 21 victories when he clashes with Luke Simpkin.

All eyes will be on Tony Salem, the hugely talented light heavyweight, when he makes his fourth appearance of 2007 by stepping into the ring with London’s Nick Okoth.

Salem could not have been more impressive in his four fights to date, which have all resulted in notable victories and a British title challenge has already been mooted for the Finchley resident.

“I watched Tony Oakey’s British light heavyweight victory last week and I believe I am the most talented challenger for that belt as Peter Haymer, who fought on the same card, was defeated by Paul David who I beat easily in January.”

“After this I will be looking towards a British title and hope to have the opportunity to fight for a belt by the end of the year.”

Also on the card will be the impressive Gary Woolcombe, victorious in 22 of his 23 bouts, Sam Webb, Scott Woolford, Lee Cook and Jamie Radford.

Frank Maloney Promotions presents “Back From The Brink’ at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, Ledrington Road London SE19 2BB on June 15, 2007. Tickets are priced at £70 and £40 and are available by logging onto www.frankmaloney.com or by calling the Box Office at 0871 226 1508. The fight is also televised live on Sky TV. • Haney does not want to fight Shakur 23/10/2026
I’ve seen their sparring videos on YouTube. And I can see why Haney is having all of this hullabaloo before signing on to fight Shakur Stevenson. He knows he can’t beat Shakur. Plus, coming off of that ass-whipping he got from Ryan Garcia, steroid claims aside, he knows Shakur will cook him and he does not want to have another legitimate loss on his record. […]

  • Why did we believe Morrison would have beaten Mercer? 22/10/2026
Why was anyone giving Tommy Morrison a chance in that fight? That fight went the way it was supposed to go, with Ray Mercer winning even though that ko was probably one of the most brutal you would ever see in boxing. Check the facts, Mercer beat Morrison in the amateurs. Handily as well. Mercer was the champion… Mercer was the heavy favorite. 3 posts - 2 pa […]
  • I just realize how scared Spinks was ahead of his fight against Tyson 22/10/2026
Did you guys stop to appreciate how frightened Spinks was? Even as a trained fighter like himself, you could see the visible fear in his eyes. He knew he stood no chance of winning. He also was probably thinking about how bad those punches were going to hurt. lolol… I could swear I saw him trembling in the ring when Tyson’s music came on and started his walk […]

  • Do we understand that these people are FIGHTING? 03/10/2026
We watch boxing as if it is just a sport. But do we realize that these people are fighting. Like, literally trying to beat each other to death in the ring? Do we appreciate how different that is? I was sitting back today and watching some old fights and the reality hit me. These people are actually fighting. How amazing and shocking that is at the same time? […]
