Boxing In Australasia: Weekend Results

There were a few good cards this weekend in Australasia, with two decent shows Down Under and a bill in Japan.

The action last night took place at Rugby Park in Gisborne, New Zealand as Auckland’s “Mountain Warrior”, Shane Cameron, saw off his second straight American opponent, stopping Robert Davis, 32-10 (20), in the 11th round.

31 year old Cameron, 23-1 (20), retained the IBF Pan-Pacific Heavyweight title with the win, coming after a decision victory over Terry Smith last September in Christchurch for the WBO Oriental and WBO Asia Pacific belts.

Cameron has held a myriad of regional titles and to date has only lost to American based Nigerian, Friday Ahunya, when “Friday the 13th” stopped him in the twelfth and final round in Auckland in November, 2007.

In an upcoming battle for bragging rights of New Zealand, Cameron steps up to face heavy-punching former world title challenger David Tua, 49-3-1 (42), at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton on June 6 in what should be an absolute firefight as Tua will be coming off a near two year layoff.

Also on Saturday, one of Japan’s top featherweights Hiroyuki Enoki, 28-1-2 (20), successfully came off a loss in a WBA title fight to Chris John in October to KO Indonesian novice Ardi Diego, 5-2 (2), in the third round at Tokyo’s famed Korakuen Hall.

Heading now to Dallas Brooks Hall in East Melbourne, Australia on Friday, local light heavyweight “Tiger” Tim Bell, 15-5-1 (12), duked it out with New South Wales based Congo born Sonni Michael Angelo, 15-7-2 (5).

Angelo was a late replacement opponent and did well as such but couldn’t shift the iron-chinned Bell, who won a unanimous 12 round points decision to retain the PABA title.

On the undercard, Mark Quon, 4-2 (1), won the vacant Australian Super Bantam crown with a ten round points verdict over Dean Livanos, 4-1 (1), who suffered his first loss.
