Former heavyweight boxer Jimmy Young, who beat George Foreman and fought Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton in the 1970s, has died. He was 56. Young died Sunday at Hahnemann University Hospital, a spokeswoman told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The Philadelphia Daily News reported that he died of heart disease after a six-day hospitalization. The 6-1, 210-pound Young compiled a 35-18-3 record with 12 knockouts during a career that spanned from 1969-90. Young lost a championship bout to Ali on April 30, 1976, although some boxing experts disputed the decision. He beat Foreman nearly a year later in a 12-round decision in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on March 17, 1977. But perhaps his toughest loss was a split decision to Norton on Nov. 5, 1977, in a WBC elimination bout in Las Vegas.

Pryce Held.
David Barnes has withdrawn from his British Welterweight title defence against Bradley Pryce on March 4 at the Kingsway Leisure Centre in Widnes due to a bout of influenza. An explosive fight was anticipated as Barnes and Pryce engaged in a heated war of words that has now been put on hold. Even now, the fiery Welshman has accused Barnes of faking it so that he can hold on to his prized Lonsdale belt. Pryce stormed, “Barnes is faking it so he can hold on to his belts for a bit longer. This will give him extra time to prepare but he’s only kidding himself because I will take it from him when I knock him out,” He added, “Whilst he is recovering, I am still in the gym and preparing as if the fight is still on. This delay is only increasing my motivation, conditioning and strength everyday and by the time the new date is confirmed I will be super-fit.” (more…)

Eastman to Contest Title Again?

© Hennessysports.com
Howard Eastman says there is no chance that he will retire from boxing for some time to come. The thirty-four year old “Battersea Bomber” might have lost a decision to Bernard Hopkins for the undisputed middleweight crown last Saturday, but Eastman is undeterred. Even Hopkins stated that Eastman deserves a rematch and the vast majority of observers are of the opinion that Hopkins merely stole the win, rather than thoroughly dominating his British foe. The chances of Eastman securing a Hopkins rematch are remote as Hopkins indicates his desire to win the light heavyweight crown from Glen Johnson. However, there are still plenty of deserving middleweight contenders around and Eastman would likely be paired with one of them for a vacant middleweight title. We will keep you updated to further developments in this story as they happen.

Arum to Promote Tyson?
It is thought that Top Rank chief Bob Arum is willing to take a gamble on promoting Mike Tyson if the former heavyweight champion retains his fitness and returns to the ring. Arum was set to bid for Tyson’s signature for a multi-million dollar deal last year, but the move collapsed when Tyson was knocked out in four rounds by unheralded Briton Danny Williams. In severe financial strife, Tyson would likely jump at the idea of fighting under Arum’s Top Rank Banner. Arum broke all boxing’s financial records through his partnership with Oscar de la Hoya and his Top Rank talent roster currently holds Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Erik Morales to name but two superstars. We will keep you updated to further developments.

Michalczewski Tops Universum Card.
Next Saturday former WBO light heavyweight world champion Dariusz Michalczewski returns to the ring on a big event promoted by Universum Box-Promotion: A championship triple header at the huge Color Line Arena of Hamburg. “This event has been a major subject for many months. We present three world title fights on the same evening and a sensational undercard. This will be the best boxing event we ever promotedâ€, promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl said on the event that is already sold out for several months and will attract over 17.000 spectators to Hamburg’s biggest indoor arena. “It’s not the first time we make big fights. But this time we have three world title contests with top quality opposition. It’s an absolutely special feature for all boxing fans.†(more…)

Tyson Return?
Ringside at the middleweight championship contest between Bernard Hopkins and Howard Eastman last night was none other than former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. Still recuperating from the knee injury he sustained while fighting Danny Williams last year, Tyson spoke of returning to the ring around May of this year for three “easy fights.” Admittedly, there is not much chance that Tyson will ever be involved in any meaningful fights

in the division again, but the strength of his name still holds drawing power and may be able to help his financial situation. Owing millions of dollars, Tyson will have to hope that whatever he does in the ring will not injure him again if he is to secure enough paydays to help him. And despite his tarnished legacy, there are still plenty of fighters whom would want to fight him above anyone else.

Golden Boy Sign Witter.
Despite knowing he will not be able to resume his boxing career as soon as he would like due to a broken hand, Junior Witter has plenty to celebrate. The source of Witter’s celebrations lay in the fact that he has been signed up for a three fight deal with fighter/promoter Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions. The pact is a huge payoff for Witter’s years of persistence since losing to Zab Judah four years ago, his only loss to date. In a prelude to last night’s Hopkins-Eastman main event, Witter dropped Lovemore N’dou twice, something not even Miguel Cotto could do before surviving a late assault from the tough Australian. Witter, from Bradford in England certainly impressed his future promoter and will likely return to the United States to conquer again. De La Hoya has already mentioned a fight with WBC champion Arturo Gatti for Witter as it seems unlikely that Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be available to fight Gatti. Stay tuned for more details as they happen.

Eastman Wants Trilogy.
Pound for pound king Hopkins told Eastman’s promoter Mick Hennessy that his man deserved a second showdown following his outstanding effort. For the Londoner, it can’t come soon enough. “I would like to thank Bernard Hopkins for this opportunity,†Eastman said. “I hope he will give me another one. He doesn’t have to move up light heavyweight just yet (to fight Glencoffe Johnson). There is plenty of business left at middleweight. And we don’t need to be bringing in any other guys either. Jermain Taylor for instance isn’t the calibre of fighter Bernard Hopkins is. No disrespect, I would love to fight him as well, but I want Bernard Hopkins. Lets do it one more time; then I will even the score. Then we can do it a third time. After that we can look at the other guys.†(more…)

Hopkins Looks Forward.
Bernard Hopkins got the number he wanted in making his 20th title defense. Now he’s looking ahead, to making money and history as a middleweight champion approaching middle age. Hopkins had barely finished beating Howard Eastman on Saturday night when he laid out his immediate future. There wasn’t much sense looking too far ahead, though, because at the age of 40 time is beginning to run out.
“It’s about history, along with the money,” Hopkins said. “I’m not interested in making mandatory defenses against fighters you’ve never heard of anymore.”
Hopkins joined former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes as a fighter with 20 defenses. Joe Louis had 24 straight during his career, but only a handful of fighters have ever gotten to the plateau. (more…)

Hopkins Defeats Eastman.
his vaunted right hand, but the evasive tactics followed by effective countering from Hopkins was too much in the end. Eastman showed why he deserved his chance at the title, but Hopkins, perhaps now has persuaded even the most vocal of his critics that he deserves to be ranked as the world’s best fighter.
The final scores were as follows: 119-110, 117-111 and 116-112.

Taylor and Ikeke Win.
Two more fight results from the Staples Center in Los Angeles to inform you of tonight before the main event. Highly-touted middleweight prospect Jermain Taylor decimated the previously undefeated contender Daniel Edouard in three rounds in the event’s chief support bout. Edouard had no answer for Taylor’s fast, hard-hitting style, but had plenty of verbal offense after he had been stopped. With the win, Taylor may have secured a mega-fight with Bernard Hopkins should “the Executioner” prevail over Howard Eastman.
Earlier on the card, in another middleweight contest, Kingsley Ikeke defeated Marcos Primera when Primera was unable to resume fighting through damage sustained to one of his eyes.
Stay tuned for all the news on the main event of Bernard Hopkins vs. Howard Eastman coming soon.
