Friday night, at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, Matchroom Sports hosted a fightnight which would see Lightening Lenny Daws make the first defence of his British Light Welterweight Title as he faced Welshman – Jason Cook.

Cook goes for it straight from the bell and gets off to a fast start against Daws. With just over a minute of the first remaining – Cook lands a ‘big left hook’ to the head of the Champion who’s legs ‘wobble’ and he is forced to cover up. Daws is under pressure on the ropes but keeps upright.

It’s a good start for ‘Cookie’ with Daws struggling to settle in.

Cook is fired up and keeps up a busy work-rate. Daws sustains a cut to the left cheek during the second round. Cooks punches continue to ‘fly out’ and he finds success with the right in the third frame. Daws starts to settle in. By the end of the sixth Sky Statistics reveal that Cook has landed 80 of 327 punches thrown (24% success) as opposed to 62 of 287 (21%).

Cookie drops his gloves then grins as Daws gets through with a few head shots in the seventh. Daws gains in confidence as the fight progresses. Cook – though not as fast – remains focussed. (more…)

London’s Lenny Daws lost the British light welter title to Motherwell, Scotland’s Barry Morrison when they met in 2007 but with both boxers having very similar ‘stats’ – the rematch at York Hall in Bethnal Green on Friday night proved to be another closely matched contest.

It was a good first round with both men targeting the head, but keeping a high guard. Daws continued with the head-shots in the second frame while Morrison throws a few body punches with one straying a bit low in the second half of the round.

Daws lands a right, followed by a left to the head in the closing half minute but Morrison immediately replies with a left to the body. Morrison swings out a left glove but it doesn’t reach it’s target in the closing seconds.

Both men trade punches in the first half minute of round three and Morrison goes for shots to head then body, in sharp contrast to his opponent as Daws hasn’t thrown body shots yet. (more…)
