  • Boxing Preview: Andre Ward vs. Arthur Abraham

Tonight at Carson, California’s Home Depot Center, WBA super middleweight champ Andre Ward defends against challenger Arthur Abraham as part of the ongoing Super Six Tournament.

Ward is coming off a rough and tumble affair with hardened veteran Sakio Bika in November, and that clash was probably the perfect warm up bout for this evening’s test against Abraham.

Undefeated at 23-0 (13), Ward will face a seasoned ex-IBF middleweight king in the form of Abraham, who, like Bika, will bring pressure and wild swings to the party at the Home Depot Center.

Abraham, 32-2 (26), saw a return to form in his most recent outing, a good scrap in February with ex-WBA super middle title challenger Stjepan Bozic that was cut short when Bozic retired in the second with a hand injury. (more…)

  • Carl Davis Wins USBO Cruiserweight Title

After spending several grueling months training under physical fitness guru John Schaeffer from the Winning Factor Sports Science Training Systems, located in Reading, Pennsylvania, heavyweight Carl Davis showed up in a cruiserweight body to battle for the vacant USBO Cruiserweight Championship at the UIC Pavilion, Chicago, Illinois, last Friday. Although plagued by a flu bug which sent him to the hospital two days earlier, Carl Davis looked the part of a determined cruiserweight. Former world cruiserweight champion King Arthur Williams came in overweight, and he was forced to lose two pounds the day of the weigh in.

King Arthur Williams came into the bout believing it to be one of his final opportunities at a title, and was a far tougher opponent than one would have expected, fighting tough and smart. Williams used every bit of savvy to thwart off the younger and stronger Davis.

The first five rounds went to Davis, who, behind a strong left jab, dominated those rounds as anticipated. Not to be outdone, the cagey veteran Williams decided to try to upset the younger fighter with overhand rights. Davis withstood several of those punches, and despite being rocked several times by those types of punches, displayed an uncommon ability and showed a true championship heart to recover quickly from those shots and regain control of the fight. • Boxing Preview: Carl Froch vs. Arthur Abraham

Both Carl Froch and Arthur Abraham entering the ring tonight in Helsinki, Finland will be guaranteed the next step through the Super Six tournament to the semi’s.

It just depends on how they fare on the night and the decision that comes after as to whereabouts they are in the proceedings i.e knockout win or points win or loss.

This is because of two men that have left the tournament on medical grounds, Mikkel Kessler and Andre Dirrell. Dirrell has had to pull out citing neurological damage caused by the illegal punch that Abraham landed in their fight not long ago.

Kessler, after beating Froch over twelve rounds, has had to pull out of the tournament due to an eye injury he has sustained, and is set to take approximately nine months off from boxing.

In defeat, although both had lost their undefeated records, Froch and Abraham had still done enough damage to their previous opponents to the extent that they have had to retire from the tournament.

It is quite clear then that these boys can bang, Abraham’s record stands at 31-1, 25 KO’s and Froch’s stands 26-1, 20 KO’s.

They are both very unorthodox fighters. Abraham tends to be a slow starter, takes a look at the job in hand, feels the opponent’s shots and generally likes to sit behind a very high guard.

Often losing the first few rounds, he uses very little, if any, lateral movement or footwork and will plod forward until he pins his man against the ropes and throws straight right hands and wild looping hooks. (more…)
