  • Cereté Roars as Pro Boxing Returns with WBA Future Showcase – World Boxing Association

Cereté Roars as Pro Boxing Returns with WBA Future Showcase – World Boxing Association

On Friday, July 25, the Mario de León Coliseum in Cereté, Córdoba, came alive with the electrifying return of professional boxing, hosting the WBA Future of Colombian Boxing—an event that not only brought big-time fights back to this historic boxing town, but also shone a spotlight on the sport’s rising stars.

Organized by the World Boxing Association (WBA), the night’s main attraction was a high-stakes showdown for the WBA Fedelatin flyweight title, as local favorite José David Cogollo (6-6-2) squared off against Venezuela’s Edinson Martínez.

From the opening bell, it was clear this bout wouldn’t disappoint. Fueled by the roar of his hometown crowd, Cogollo came out with fast-paced combinations, trying to set the tempo early. But Martínez remained composed under fire, showcasing slick fundamentals and sharp counterpunching. The momentum swung back and forth, with both fighters trading leather in a war of wills that had fans on the edge of their seats.

When the dust settled after ten grueling rounds, the judges called it a draw (95-95, 99-95 for Martínez, and 96-94 for Cogollo), underscoring just how razor-close this contest truly was. Though no belt changed hands, the performance left no doubt: both men belong in the upper tier of the regional flyweight scene. A rematch could easily become one of the most anticipated fights on the Latin American boxing calendar.

The card also featured a slate of amateur exhibitions, giving the next generation of boxers a chance to shine—an essential part of the WBA Future program, which aims to develop young talent and use boxing as a force for social change.

Cereté mayor Said Bitar Castilla, along with veteran promoter Alberto Agámez Berrío, lauded the event’s success and reaffirmed the city’s commitment to the sport. “Cereté is once again the heartbeat of a sport that has given us so much glory,” Bitar said during the opening ceremony. “This is an investment in our local talent and in the future of Colombian boxing.”

With an energized crowd in attendance and a global livestream via the WBA’s digital platforms, the Cereté edition of WBA Future sent a clear message: Colombian boxing is alive and well, and its future is just getting started. The WBA continues to stand firmly behind the regional growth of the sport.

  • WBA Future Champions Returns to Venezuela at the Yesterday Center – World Boxing Association

WBA Future Champions Returns to Venezuela at the Yesterday Center – World Boxing Association

The World Boxing Association’s acclaimed development program, WBA Future Champions, is back in Venezuela. This Saturday, June 21, the Yesterday Recreational Center in Turmero will host the ninth edition of the series, featuring a stacked card of ten professional bouts designed to showcase the next generation of boxing talent.

Since its launch in September 2023, WBA Future has already delivered over 100 amateur and professional bouts across Venezuela. The platform has become a proving ground for rising stars, and three names have consistently stood out—Diego Carbajal, Gleybert “Canelito” Maia, and Geremy Vera.

Headlining Saturday night’s action is featherweight prospect Diego Carbajal from Carabobo. He’ll face coastal-region fighter Danny Núñez (3-4-1) in what’s being billed as a pivotal test for both men—particularly for Carbajal, who’s coming off a hard-fought unanimous decision win over Derek Areinamo back in March. Núñez brings international experience and could pose the toughest challenge yet for the young standout.

Gleybert “Canelito” Maia, undefeated in eight appearances, steps into the ring against Táchira’s Yorman Sulbarán (2-2), who’s moving up in weight to meet the challenge. Maia continues to build momentum after a solid decision win over Ronaldo Chacón earlier this year.

Also on the card is featherweight Pablo Molina Gamarro, grandson of Venezuelan Olympic legend Pedro Gamarro. He will take on Miranda native Jorge Espinoza in another bout to watch closely.

The night could also see a national title on the line, as undefeated super flyweight Geremy Vera (8-0) is expected to defend his Venezuelan championship in what promises to be another thrilling chapter in his young career.

The WBA Future Champions program has given these fighters a crucial platform to grow and shine, under the mentorship of seasoned trainers and boxing legends like multi-division world champion Leo “Torito” Gámez, David Grimán, Eloy Rojas, and Jesús “Kiki” Rojas. Beyond the ring, the initiative has also opened a global window for these talents, with every bout streamed on the official WBA YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@WorldBoxingAssociationOfficial.

With events already held in countries like Colombia, Panama, Mexico, Argentina, the U.S., Spain, and Poland, WBA Future continues to grow as a global launchpad for emerging boxing talent.

The action returns to Maracay this Saturday, June 21—don’t miss it.

  • Jermall Charlo Returns with Authority, Stops Thomas LaManna in Comeback Statement – World Boxing Association

Jermall Charlo Returns with Authority, Stops Thomas LaManna in Comeback Statement – World Boxing Association

After nearly 18 months out of the ring, Jermall Charlo made his return in emphatic fashion Saturday night, scoring a sixth-round TKO over Thomas LaManna at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas. With the win, Charlo captured the WBA Continental Americas super middleweight title and sent a loud message to the rest of the division: he’s back—and he’s coming for the crown.

From the opening bell, Charlo showed no signs of rust. Sharp, focused, and physically imposing at 168 pounds, he established control with a piston-like jab and pinpoint timing. LaManna, game but clearly outgunned, began showing signs of wear early as Charlo picked him apart with surgical precision.

In the third round, the Houston native landed a crushing right hand that sent LaManna crashing to the canvas—the first of multiple knockdowns in what quickly became a one-sided affair. LaManna beat the count, but the tide had fully turned.

Charlo’s assault continued into the fourth, where a looping left staggered LaManna again. Though LaManna tried to keep his footing, the referee ruled it a clean knockdown, further widening the gap between the two fighters.

By Round 5, Charlo was in full command. He punished LaManna with a body-head combination that dropped him once more. Though LaManna bravely made it to his stool, his corner—and the referee—had seen enough. The fight was waved off before the start of the sixth, awarding Charlo a technical knockout victory and marking a successful return to the sport.

With the win, Charlo improves to 34-0 (23 KOs), keeping his unbeaten record intact and reaffirming his place among the super middleweight elite. “It feels great to be back,” Charlo said post-fight. “I’m grateful for all the support. I’ve worked hard to get here, and now I’m ready for what’s next.”

That “next” could come in the form of interim WBA champ José Reséndiz or Bektemir Melikuziev, who recently won a title eliminator. Regardless of who’s across the ring, Charlo made one thing clear: he’s not just back—he’s here to take over.

In a division stacked with talent and intrigue, Jermall Charlo’s return adds another dangerous name to the mix. And if Saturday night was any indication, he’s not easing his way back in—he’s kicking the door down.
