Fundamental Blows and Blocks: The Straight Right
________________________________________
The heavy artillery of the straight punches, it is also a simple punch and easy to learn though it is often troublesome because the basic concept is often misunderstood. In any power blow the bones structure must be aligned so that one side of the body forms a straight line- this lets the bones support the body freeing the muscles to propel the other side of the body forward with great force.
To throw the right wt must be over a straight left leg (check video of Hearns, Arguello, Louis throwing the right and look at the left leg) or, for a hook, over a straight right leg.
The technique is this, and it helps to start very slowly in order to get the feel:
From the fundamental position shift the wt forward until it is directly over the left leg. Turn the right hip- pointing sharply on the rt toe-and shoulder through to the center line then drive the right arm into complete extension. The line of travel is @ shoulder ht and when the punch lands the palm-side is down. The arm recoils to the starting position as the shoulder/hip return to their original spots. The propulsion is from the twist of the waist. Drive the arm out with such force it feels about to be disjointed at the shoulder.
Several defenses:
1) shoulder block: from your basic stance as he throw a straight right turn your body to the right in order to take the punch on the shoulder muscle. You can raise your left shoulder by shifting your wt to the right leg (straight), drop the left arm to position nearly alongside left leg.
2)the 'drop;: this works well with overhand right, right hooks etc...Basically the more the punch loops the further you drop. From a fundamental stance as he loops a right at you drop your body from the waist over a bent right leg. You'll be turned almost sideways, left low to guard your side, right high to block a hook.
3) the stop: From your basic stance, as he lifts his rt elbow to begin launching a blow drive your open left glove as if jabbing) to either the bicep or shoulder. To the muscle it will negate that right hand shortly as it bruise that muscle. To the shoulder it will screw with his balance and give you a shot to counter. If you've seen Cinderella Man, you know of Braddock. When he beat Baer a pick part of it was a hard jab to the shoulder each time Max wound up his right.
4)cross parry: a sucker move. Very simply when he throw a right reach over with your right and push his to your left. More wrist than armand don't raise the elbow. The sucker part comes here: you are seemingly wide open for a left hook and you should know this and know that he will see it too. If he throws the hook, drop your head into the crook of your right arm- weight from left leg to right, slide it 2-3" to the right- which will get you under his hook. As your weight reaches your right leg hook his midsection.

Stole it from people smarter than me
Seriously, take a look through some used or vintage book stores: if you are lucky you'll find a book entitled Boxing by Edwin L Haislet back in 1940 that is the standard bearer of the "How-to-" boxing world. If not there were many books in the 1940s 1950s and even the 1960s published by the various universities that had boxing programs back in the day. These are worthwhile not only because of what they have inside, but for the typically clear explanations.
