    Default I'm a noob I know, but what are the numbers of punches

    when someone says 1-2 it's a jab-straight right, correct?

    What are the numerical identifiers for all the punches?
    For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.

    The basics

    1=jab
    2=straight right/cross
    3=left hook
    4=uppercut

    Cus DeAmato used a different number system in which each number signalled a particular punch to specific part of the body.
    If you hear a voice within you saying that I am not a painter, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.

    Nothing in boxing irritates me more than the punch number system. Cus D'Amato invented that at some point, or so the story goes, and when Tyson became champ everybody seemed to go with it. You could not go into a gym for the longest time without hearing somebody blaring numbers like a marching cadence.
    The second most irritating thing in boxing also comes from the Tyson era. This would be the "move your head after you punch" crap. To this day, in most any gym, you can see the fruits of that abortion. Somebody throws four punches with no shoulder turn or weight shift, etc... then bobs their head side to side. Moving no more than an inch or two in either direction.

    Actually I agree with that
    When Im working a fighter on mitts, they should know from the position of my hand what shot I want,I aint going to be blowing wind yelling out numbers when I could be moving,and critiquing their shots

    Yes, exactly. I believe that, when working the mitts, that by what my body does and the targets I flash them with my hands the reaction should occur. If I have to yell numbers I'll start doing long division in my head so I don't get bored.

    Heh. Trainer Monkey's got me so away from that silly number system, I've royally annoyed one of the trainers at the local gym that I visit once a week (I mostly go there for the better weight room and because my stable mate still goes there so I can work with him a bit). Anyway, the trainer'll hold up a mitt and call a number that I completely ignore and use a completely different punch than what he called for. It doesn't help that the guy routinely forgets that I'm a southpaw.
