Are there any exercises for those muscles that cover up the ribs? I cant think of anything except for abs, that i guess works a little on those muscles too.

If your talking bout your pecks, you can lie on your back on a bench, have your hands on the floor while holding weights, and lift them above your body keeping your arms straight. Try using larger weights and doing quick repetitions in reasonable sets, say 40-3, it depends on your size and weight and strength but your gonna want those tough if your worried bout protecting your ribs.
I don't even know if they do protect your ribs all that much! There's loads of stuff you can do other than what I just said, have a search on google for pectoral (i think thats how you spell it) exercises!
Good luck!
I think they are called the intercostal muscles, I know you can strengthen them but you cannot isolate them, ill post back if i remember how to work them.
After searching there is nothing to isolate them which i already knew, but they are worked during normal exercises. To get better at taking a punch which i think you want a good ab work out must also strenghten the ribs, a medicine ball will directly target the area and improve the way you can absorb damage.
Strengthen your abs if you want to take body shots, strengthen your chest (Pectoral Muscles) if you want to take shots in the chest. Don't worry about isolating the muscle, you just need what works for ya.
Once you have the extra muscle, you can further toughen your muscles up through Iron Body conditioning, have someone hit your abs with a medicen ball, or have them hit you all over, and increase the the intensity over time.
