Thread: Can someone explain to me WHY GOMEZ gets to fight COTTO?

I mean COTTO is the MAN! He just defeated 2 BIG Former true CHAMPS: SSM and ZAB wtf does Gomez have next

Gomez has some popularity from his contender appearances.
He became more well known after beating Gatti.
Cotto deserves a tune up after two big fights so Gomez is maybe the best known guy at 147 who has no real chance of winning......

yeah thats the only thing i can think of is that cottos is long over due for an easy fight or a tune up?

Its just Cotto staying busy. He has worked hard recently and deserves a relative gimme. As long as he stays busy and puts hard fights in with the occasional gimme then Ive no complaints. Not every fight can be a mega fight.

Cotto deserves a gimmie Isnt he the heir apparent to Mayweather or something? Do you see Margarito taking a gimmie(technically yeah because he's just gonna make Cintron cry again)

But if Mayweather took an easy fight people would be barking to high heaven that he is ducking Cotto.

Cotto gets an easy fight and its because "he's earned it"

And if a Cotto fan tells me "thats different.. Mayweather is the number one p4p and Cotto just got here" then you're basically admitting that Floyd can't duck Cotto because you're admitting Cotto aint ready

Cotto was trying to land a fight with Floyd or Oscar but nothing couldn't be done but why fight Margo now that he was beaten by PW and PW was beaten by Quintana. Cintron want it Margo plus he hasn't done crap to land a fight with Cotto. The same goes to Clottey and lost a fight to Margo.

What Cotto is doing? Well he wants to clean the WW div, and by clean I mean not unify but to beat the top names(doesn't make sense fighting Quintana again) and by fighting the winner of Cintron vs MArgo in the summer to hopefully fight Floyd next if he wins this one. (wich Im sure of it)

I don't think there's anything wrong with Cotto fighting Gomez. It's a good fight that will get him some more exposure with casual fans at least.

Cotto shouldn't be judged as critically as Floyd as he's 4 or 5 years behind him in career terms.

Floyd has fought a few less than impressive names in his career, Henry Brusseles is the most noticable.

I think Cotto has done a superb job since moving upto welter and I don't mind the Gomez fight one bit.

im not criticizing cotto, i love cotto hes the MAN! i wish more fighters brought it every single time like he does to all of his fights. he ducks no one and he fight so often!

What does deserving even have to do with it though?

Boxing has NEVER been decided on merit, boxers have ALWAYS chosen their opponents. Asking if Gomez deserves to fight Cotto is like asking if someone deserved to win the lottery, mandatories aside boxing has never been a meritocracy.

It's pointless because the vast majority of matchmaking is based on the favoured fighter getting an opponent that will entertain the crowd, and be as big a commerical draw as possible whilst posing the minimum level of risk.

Every top fighter has a carefully managed career and it's the job if his team to ensure he doesn't get upset in between the real big fights. Cotto has fought two career defining fights back to back and without a real big name opponent to face now he's been given a popular name opponent who shouldn't pose too much risk to his 0. That's plain common sense and whether Gomez is deserving or not is just a meaningless question to ask.

He fits all the criteria for a popular, fan friendly name opponent whilst being relatively low risk.

Gomez is known all around the world, he has an exciting style and is a popular charaacter with his never say die, underdog story.

It's a fight that was begging to be made, a nice payday for both, a fan friendly fight and a fight that should hopefully see Cotto put on a show and not upset the apple cart and ruin a potential mega fight with Margarito and later Mayweather down the line.

I have no problems with this fight whatsoever.

he is a tuneup for cotto to then possibly face margarito later in the year

You'd think so but he's going straight into a fight with the Big Show. He's a true warrior

Seriously tho Judah was closer to being a gimme then a mega fight imo. As was Oktay Urkal. Paulie and Quintana look much better in hindsight.

Fighting Gomez is no better than Calzaghe fighting Manfredo....and he took a lot of shit for that. Fair is fair.

Still, i'll be happy if he follows it with a fight against the winner of Tony - Cintron.

I think it sucks that sometimes your posts mark you as someone whos just here to 'try' and stir things up. I know your a far better poster then what we've seen of you. For example that 'experiment' thread you made....

I also think you try too hard to play devils advocate for almost every thread.....

You do realize PBF fought Sharmba and Zab (After a loss) if those aren't gimmie fights for you then I don't know what is.
