Default The Fog of being a Fan

i have recently noticed that as fans we tend to ignore hard truths about some of our favorite fighters, and some times argue the points to the grave, but we aren't always right.

A few examples for me would be the denial that jones and shane took steroids, that Wlad hasn't fought anyone legit in years, that pacqious is beating on dead dogs, and that mayweather has been playing it safe, of course, who are we to criticize. for most of us are far from pros....i invite you guys to look at your favorites, and post the hard truths of your favorite fighters that you dont really like hearing or discussing, lets see watt we can come up with.

I'd question two of your assertions. Wlad has almost ONLY fought legit challengers (not his fault that they suck!). Manny's comp has been terriffic (given how much the era blows) I think. I think only Shane is already done.

    Some of my faves

Finito Lopez had 25 defenses but the level of competition he faced wasn't great. At the extremes of human size? The numbers get small and so does the talent.

    Roberto Duran
just didn't show up in top form very often and how in hell does one lose to Kirkland Laing?

By the time Jack Demspey earned his title shot and defeated Jess Willard, there just wasn't much left in the division to beat.

Really slick boxers could make Alexis Arguello look slow, clumsey and befuddled for long stretches.

Marvin Hagler's ring IQ was a cut below most ATG's

the problem with Floyd playing it safe is two-fold: 1-he runs around bragging about being GREAT. You can't be great if you continually play it safe. 2-He has been one of the top 2 faces of the sport for half a decade. When you have reached that level, you have to be willing to reward that acclaim with great performances in the ring against the best fighters you can find.

Floyd-was once on his way to being truly great, and instead became a great matchmaker.

Can you explain why Marvin Hagler's ring IQ was a cut below most ATG's

this is a pretty depressing thread

yeah it woulod be pretty stupid to deny the steriods, but appart from cheating i dont think you can knock any boxer especially at the level you are talking about

id much rather be involved with a thread titled "whats ace about boxing" or something

People knock Floyd for fighting Shane (after he won and time passed of course) yet now that Manny fights him Shane is legit?

You are being selective, most people think Pac should have fought a younger fighter.

It seems like people riff as soon as Pac pics an opponent yet when it gets close to fight time all of a sudden Shane has a chance and hes a legit opponent. I hear what you are saying but maybe I'm just finding it hard to see through the Pac worshipers. I used to love Pac I just want to spend money seeing him fight a challenge.....what challenge? Uhh....I'm not sure but it's not Shane and it's not meant for someone to respond with "Floyd" or a stupid remark. It means someone else.

I hear what you are saying, Hell I wanted him to fight Berto but now that looks silly. He may fight JMM but I think that is an easy fight for Pac Man. Floyd is in trouble. Ortiz looks good but he could collapse too.

No. I can only give examples. His reticence during the Duran fight, his starting righty against Ray Leonard and that he didn't understand he needed to close hard against Antuofuermo in the first fight.

True those are some of his failings.
