Default The Stone Roses reform - Who cares?

I have to say that I think The Stone Roses were/are one of the most overrated bands in music history. Their debut is often held up as some kind of masterpiece, but I really think it is rather poor and their second album is even worse. And that is essentially the band summed up in a couple of sentences. However, you have crap rags like the NME touting this comeback as significant. You have some reverend dude saying that 'music needs this right now'. Needs what? A second rate baggy band who couldn't even put together any significant levels of output?

Manchester has created some great bands, but I would honestly not even have The Stone Roses anywhere near my top 10. Overrated rubbish. Here's the bloody NME anyway.

When I think of decent Manchester bands I am thinking of people like Joy division, New Order, The Smiths, The Charlatans, James, Oasis, Doves et al. Heck I would even throw The Happy Mondays in over The Stone Roses.

Now if a band like The Smiths were to reform, then that would be huge. But The Stone Roses? I guess modern music really must be bad if this is something to get excited about.

My god you musical heathen's, Stone Roses have got to be one of the best band's to come out of Manchester !
If it wasnt for them the music scene in Manchester wouldnt be what it is today !
The Hacienda wouldnt of been as big as it was either if it were not for the Stone Roses!

They changed the music scene not only in Manchester, but the north.

You live in some far off land Miles and are detached from reality. Fact

Next you will tell me that your happy Steps have reformed

No, New Order were the band that made the Manchester scene for me. They innovated, sold bucketloads and wrote great songs. Heck they even owned the Hacienda. The Stone Roses weren't a patch on a band like New Order IMO. A well recieved debut and a superbly tongue lashed follow up does not a great band make. The Stone Roses are like Shed Seven in terms of quality and I say that with a semi straight face. I've just never understood the appeal, but I wasn't around at the time and haven't listened to them on drugs.

What have Steps got to do with the debate? I despise all teenybopper horror and leave that for Bilbo to experiment with. I'm sure he is following H for all the latest semi-homo fashions in order to entice young lady folk. As for me, I stand proud with my Smiths albums and my Morrissey poster in the bathroom.

However, I will concede that I thought Mani was good on the bass in Primal Scream. Now 'Exterminator', that's an album that I can respect. 'Swastika eyes' is some seriously heavy shit.

Be gone with you scallywag and stand in the corner! Ian Brown or Morrissey as a lead? There is just no contest. One can yodel up the mountains and compose Wildean couplets, whilst the other looks like a monkey and sings like a.....well, it isn't even singing really. He just mumbles a lot. Ian Brown is all that is wrong with a frontman. He is awful and hasn't even attempted to master his craft. You don't even need to sing well to be a great frontman as John Lydon has shown, but you do need that oomph. Ian Brown is just a jumped up scally and gave birth to the anorak frontman aka Liam Gallagher. Dumb and boring.

Saw Ian Brown live and he had great stage presence and interaction with the crowd.

Stone Roses and Happy Mondays are the two best bands from Manchester from the 80's IMO, Madchester was built around these bands!
Dont get me wrong James and Oasis were also great bands, but these guy's really got my musical taste buds flowing, and yes, the drugs also helped
Listening to the likes of Morrisey and the Smiths just wants me to slash my wrists

I moved to Manchester in 90 when I started uni, so i caught the scene full on - the Roses defined my time there no doubt.

    So I am heavily biased.

Amazing really looking back that it was only two albums (the second very weak in comparison with only 2 or 3 stand out tracks for me) and half a dozen or so other tracks that went on compilations - can't remember which tracks exactly were on first album but I know a few of my faves weren't.

Saw them around 94 at Leeds Town & Country but would love to see them on stage again for mostly nostalgic reasons. Bring it

Not my cup of tea musically, but glad to see some strong opinions from the other side too.

Leeds T and C! Haha, I used to go there as a teenager to listen to bands too! Ah, nostalgic times, but I recall always being miserable then too. People who listen to The Smiths tend to be a bit odd.

And anyway, "from the other side" makes us sound like were part of the dark side and one of Darth Vaders henchmen. If that is the case i want to be Boba Fett
