I moved to Manchester in 90 when I started uni, so i caught the scene full on - the Roses defined my time there no doubt.

    So I am heavily biased.

Amazing really looking back that it was only two albums (the second very weak in comparison with only 2 or 3 stand out tracks for me) and half a dozen or so other tracks that went on compilations - can't remember which tracks exactly were on first album but I know a few of my faves weren't.

Saw them around 94 at Leeds Town & Country but would love to see them on stage again for mostly nostalgic reasons. Bring it

Not my cup of tea musically, but glad to see some strong opinions from the other side too.

Leeds T and C! Haha, I used to go there as a teenager to listen to bands too! Ah, nostalgic times, but I recall always being miserable then too. People who listen to The Smiths tend to be a bit odd.

First album is a classic album imo. Second coming was pretty poor, xcept for 2 or 3 songs

Definetly not I. Havent' listened to them extensively simply because I cannot for the life of me get into any of their stuff. The guys voice is completely gutless, he may as well just STFU as some of the instrumentals are moderately interesting. Anyone who holds them in the same light as the Smiths or Joy Division must be a twit who so happens to be from Manchester, just like that turd Liam Gallagher. I imagine the Stone Roses recorded before the Smiths? If not the acclaim some seem to give them is even more puzzling to me.

The Smiths were well before The Stone Roses. I totally agree regarding Ian Brown's vocals. They are appallingly bad, he just kind of mumbles away to himself. Not very nice to listen to at all. I don't rate the songwriting in The Stone Roses at all, it is in no way comparable to the poetry and craft displayed by bands like Joy Division and The Smiths. They were truly innovative bands and brought something entirely new to the musical landscape. You don't need drugs to enjoy those bands. You can sit down with a clear head and let the music take you somewhere on its own terms. I never really got that with The Stone Roses.

    My favourite band

If you dont like them you havent really given their music a chance

Forget all your current opinion, get their first album and sit back and listen a couple of times and youll be hooked

They did a lot more quality music than that mind
