Vassily 'the Tiger' Jirov's boxing style
Would anyone happen to know what specific style he fights with? Its kind of a hands held high guard, so he can parry punches with ease, and there is alot of head movement involved. There is a boxer at my gym who fights and moves the same as Jirov. He somewhat moves like a fencer. A fencer that could slug your head off. So it got me kind of intrigued.. ;)
I know there are all kinds of styles like crossarmed, and hitman and all those. But i couldnt quite fit this style of boxing into any category. Since i know some of you guys on here are trainers, I was wondering if you guys had any insight on this particular style. Seen it used before or maybe you even trained boxers that have utilized it.

Heres footage of 'the Tiger' sparring.
Is this style taught to fighters? If so, how is it effectively used and what do you think are the pros and cons?
P.S. the boxer at my gym even does the same exact 'tap on the forehead' with the lead hand movement that Jirov does! Its sucha trip. Their movement is almost identical. Im starting to wonder if the guy from my gym is TRYING to imitate Jirov.

Honestly, I don't know what in the world half-no, 98%- of these 'styles' refer to. Jirov was a guy with an extensive amateur background, and it showed in his style. He was real solid fundamentally- look at the way he boxed after he got hurt in the Letterlough fight. He had a good jab, good left hand good body puncher, good hitter, nothing truly outstanding, but he wasn't terribly deficient in any area. He didn't fight too smart against Toney but, then agin, he couldn't beat Toney if he had a tag-team partner and a shotgun.
Just a word of advice for all the amateur boxers and trainers of amateurs. Those first formative years aren't the time to develope one's style, their individual flair, or to teach them a ton of tricks. It is a time to drill and repeat and to master the basics of the art- each punch, the footwork, how to block and slip punches, basic counters. Get all that down. Then, when the amateur turns pro, they are prepared to learn more. It takes time to learn this stuff- and I'm admittedly as guilty as hell of teaching a kid natural left hook all kinds of stuuf he has no business knowing just yet and neglecting other stuff in turn.
Re: Vassily 'the Tiger' Jirov's boxing style
the thing with style is that people get these weird names from videogames and books. here is the reality about style, it is a combination of three things: the natural ability of the fighter(which is a combination of things in itself) as well as the methods of the teacher(s), and the most forgotten component of style: the opponent. i fight like ray leonard sometimes, other times i fight like winky wright, or sometimes toney, mormeck, mosley...most of that is dependent upon who i am looking at in the ring. you cant give a style a name really, simply because it is always different for every fighter. thats what makes boxing better than any other sport in my opinion.
