David Haye v Jean Marc-Mormeck RBR - World Crusierweight Titles

Once again let me welcome you to the latest installment of the British Round-by-rounds, which is this week capitalising on the huge interest in the SMW division sparked by last week's Calzaghe v Kessler matchup. With Froch having been desperate to tie Calzaghe into a fight over recent years and Robin Reid having already notched a defeat against Calzaghe, this is a make or break fight for both men and their aspirations for 2008 and beyond.

Carl Froch (21-0, 17KOs) is without doubt a very talented boxer, and packs a fair wallop too, which gave Sergey Tatevosyan his first ever KO defeat back in March, with a two round demolition. One of the trademarks of Froch's style is his cocky insistence on holding his leading left hand extremely low, and using it to fly upwards at his opponent, thus giving him his nickname, "The Cobra". However, the style does leave Froch without a guard held by his leading arm, and although elusive, he certainly can be caught. Froch has been British champion for over three years now, developing his reputation, and proclaiming his greatness to anyone who would listen. Certainly, a win against Reid on Friday night would put himself in the picture for an European title shot, or even a position challenging for one of the world titles should Calzaghe vacate and move up to Light Heavyweight.

Robin Reid (39-5-1, 27KOs) is the more experienced of the fighters, and at 36 will be looking to make that experience work for him against the opponent, six years his junior. Reid made his comeback from a two-year hiatus back in March with a points victory over Jesse Brinkley in the USA v UK Contender competition, having hung up his gloves after Jeff Lacy demolished him in 2005. However, all of Reid's five defeats have come whilst challenging for different organisations' versions of the World Super Middleweight titles, and will hope that he can maintain that record, bringing his strong right hand into play to trouble Froch. A win would obviously give Reid's career a spurt of life, and would throw him back into the mix for higher honours, but the question is whether Reid's 14-year career will count against him, or whether he can make the experience of those 45 fights count in his favour.

My tip is for Froch to finish Reid in the middle to later rounds, but Reid has plenty of quality, and may trouble Froch early on.

Elsewhere on the bill from the Nottingham Ice Arena is John Murray v Dean Hickman for the English Lightweight title in his first challenge for a proper belt, where he will also defend his WBC Youth lightweight belt, and the return of Esham Pickering, who will not be putting his British super-bantam title on the line in a keep-busy 8-rounder against journeyman Sean Hughes.

Jot me down for a Froch TKO about the 3rd round. Reids already out the door and hes already payed so what the hell is he gonna prolong the fight for???

Just got in there dance 2 rounds throw 3,4 punches come out in the 3rd and hit the canvas.

It wont happen but gee it'd be good if Reid sparked Froch.

My predicition for the fight is carl Froch ko 3-5 rounds. Hes too much for the old Reid who hasnt done anything recently and as soon as he feels the sting of Froch he will go down.

Froch will batter him and i see an early stoppage (maybe the 4th).
Froch has the power to drop anyone ;)

Froch by close decision.

I don't see how Froch can really win in this fight.. but he will win.

Barring last time out, Froch seems to be a slow starter, i'll be surprised if he bombs Reid out early (problem is, so what if he does?) - Reid has always had a solid chin and can make fights ugly, ugly, ugly.. which this might become before Reid's corner stop it, late, while he's on his stool.

I was just about to ask that...I am actually really REALLY eager for this one to get underway.

Even though I aint a Froch-Fan I hope that he pulls this one out...only in hopes that he'll face Kessler soon & I can see Kess hand lil' Carl his first course in the art of counting light bulbs.

OK got half of my pick this fight end on points of that i'm 100% sure...

I'm sat on the fence for this one myself because there are so many factors to consider, but the biggie for me is, and prob is for most,can Rob raise his game from his recent stuff, although the scrappy contender fight should not be the point of write off, as for me Brinkley was just as bad if not the instigator of "The Maul And Brawl In The Hall"...

But Rob Reid was honest re himself, his timing his fitness and condition...plus obviously the lay off, but he don't look shot just yet, rusty yeah, but I don't feel he's totally run dry, Im hoping not at least....and if he can get a little of the old Robsta magic back and providing he has put in the other factors correctly eg diet, roadwork,the gym, bags, pads, and the sparring has been good enough....Then I think he has the class to pull it off, the win that is lol.....it is his last chance saloon, so why not go to the well a last time with a big big bucket and drink it dry for a big final push (providing it aint dryed up that is)

But to win, he must if all things are equal set the pace of this bout if it's possible, as Froch likes to do that himself and for me don't look comfy when taken outa step, Im none too keen on Froch or his style, though his style so far has served him well.....

Also read that Froch is again waxing lyrical already with regard to fisticuffs with Joe C , and although this kinda hype and hopes of money talk always goes on in boxing, fighters can slip up because they go out to chase the pot of gold, before first having there breakfast.....

I think he should be more focussed on the task in hand ie Rob R, unless Froch deems it really is gonna be that easy for him....then if it is, he can get in line for a lottery ticket and hope the Joe C domestic slant favours him over other fighters out there ... but for that to catch the imagination he needs a big and impressive win over Rob Reid this week, he must do a number and not just pick up a name in Reid....

But obviously Reid will have something to say about that....hopefully with a good performance, but I think we are now heading into the times of Froch being found out, maybe or maybe not in this fight with Rob R, who knowes, but sod it, at the last min I've decided I'm gonna be picking Rob for this one , but thats with my heart, and not the old garden shed speaking lol..

Reid has wanted to fight Froch for a little while but never felt hed have given himself a fair enough chance if hed have taken the fight when offered after his inactivity, he wanted a couple of warm up bouts, he got offered the Brinkley match with 2 weeks and given the circumstances ie his age inactivity, last fight result, all this put together and Rob did well, he fought a decent paced 8 rounds and was starting to land his jab and right hand.

Brinkley has power, he was the only fighter in the first contender series to score a ko, he was also in training for another fight at the time.

With this bout Robin has got more rounds under his belt in the last 18 months than Carl has, Carl has also had to be carefull in training because of his knee, hes been out for 9 months and has no experience fighting experienced fighters, Rob knows how to win after a long lay off, also something that Carl hasnt done yet is beat an undefeated fighter, well Rob took on the younger undefeated Magee in his own back yard and dropped him 4 times, Brian has an awkward southpaw style and a decent defence, Carl is tailor made for Reid, hands low, slow pace and untested, he hasnt had to take a decent shot yet which is why I find it funny that people are saying he has a decent chin, I think I remember Valery Odin having Carl in some trouble, someone did early on. Do you notice how Carls management have kept him away from any punchers ? Or undefeated fighters ?

Hopefully Rob having those 8 rounds in the bank this year will be sharper than Froch and he can get his jab working early, I see Froch lunging in trying to make an impression early and with this being his first meaningfull fight and in his home town he will try to impress early but against some one so good at fighting "rough" this will be a mistake, Carl has also never had to deal with rough tactics yet, I cant see him getting settled early or at all in this fight, he may even blow himself out early trying for the stoppage while not being as fit or sharp as he should be, Rob will come on late and maybe even stop Carl with a nice timed right hand, or Carls pathetic management may just pull him outta the fight later on with swellings around his eyes from his low guard ;D

Robin Reid is a bit long in the tooth and too inactive. I still think he has the tools to decision Froch though.

Reid looks slow and actually old, Froch is too fast for him and just the sheer speed of the uppercuts etc will be too much for the older. I cant see him improving at all since the Lacy fight and he would be even slower now. Froch by the ko early!
