Gomez says: Arum SHOW me The Money! Cotto can not hurt me!

With all the different rumors that have circulated in boxing over the last week the one that was the most intriguing had to be the reports of Miguel Cotto putting his belt on the line this spring against the popular Contender star Alfonso Gomez.
As reports circulated and everyone including other fighters put their two cents in, there was nothing coming from Gomez himself...until now.
Pound4Pound spoke with Gomez early Monday about the very topic and according to Gomez, " I started seeing the rumors pop up on the Internet this weekend so I contacted my manager (Gary Gittleson) to find out what was going on. He told me that he was contacted about a fight with Cotto but he told them (Top Rank) that the price would have to be right, and until they came back to him with a realistic offer that he wasn't even going to tell me about it."
Gittleson didn't need to contact Gomez to inform him, news leaked fast and of course Gomez called his long time manager to get the info, and who can blame him? A title fight is what Gomez wants more than anything, and a fight with Cotto is icing on the cake, the payday for that WBA 147 pound crown would surely surpass even Gomez's high expectations.

As to the fight itself there was no doubt Gomez was confident that he could defeat Cotto, regardless of the speculation that is out there. " I don't care what anyone is saying about me not being able to defeat Cotto, they are wrong and they will be surprised to see me once I get into the ring with him. I fought at middleweight and took those punches up there, at 147 Cotto doesn't have that kind of power and he won't be able to hurt me."
As Gomez went on, it was the tone of his voice that made it perfectly clear, Alfonso has no apprehension or fear about getting in the ring with the undefeated Puerto Rican star. " I know I can beat him, I am not worried about what anyone says," said a confident Gomez.
Gomez made things very clear to us that although the fight has been mentioned, there has been no real offer and until then it's all just speculation. In fact Gomez said that names like Kermit Cintron and Paul Williams have been presented as well.
Unlike other Contender stars who choose to "slither" their way through a group of Has Been's & Bums, Gomez's path is clear, and it's paved with the 147 pound elite.
In regard to the injury to his hand suffered in his victory over Ben Tackie, Gomez said it's coming along fine now and he should be back in full swing by February.
By my calculations that's perfect timing to start training for a fight in April, even better if the training is to get ready for this proposed match up with Miguel Cotto.

You have to love Gomez he's all heart but I am sorry, I disagree there big fella....eat a couple of those body shots from Cotto and you'll be on my side of the arguement
Re: Gomez says: Arum SHOW me The Money! Cotto can not hurt me!
He can't hurt us said: Malignaggi and his trainers.
Even though Cotto suffered a boxers fracture in the 5th, Cotto did enough damage in 4 rounds against Malignaggi to last Paulie a life time. Cotto is no longer the fraile, weight drained fighter he was at 140. I am sure that if the money is right, Gomez will take the fight for the sake of just getting a very decent paycheck. I am not saying Gomez will just show up to get paid, I think Gomez will give it his all.
Re: Gomez says: Arum SHOW me The Money! Cotto can not hurt me!
Well I think it is perfectly normal for a boxer to believe in himself regardless of the reality of the situation. That is why they are boxers......they have a will and confidence most of us never will have.
If Gomez doesn't believe in Gomez who is going to? Further, what is he going to say, "To tell you the truth, Cotto is going to knock the living shet out of me. And commissioners should be examined after approving this fight, but I want a payday."

Good point. LMAO CC
It was just the way Paulie and his people thought that just because Paulie sparred with bigger fighters, that he was not going to be affected by Cotto. I know Gomez has fought at 160 during the Contender but Cotto is no Peter Manfredo Jr nor is he a Jesse Brinkley. But I hear what you are saying boozeboxer and if this fight does happen and if Cotto does not take Gomez serious, Gomez could do pretty good for himself. I doubt Cotto takes anyone lightly but we have all seen it happen to the best of them and Cotto is no exception.
Re: Gomez says: Arum SHOW me The Money! Cotto can not hurt me!
Fight would be useless, Cotto would destroy this guy, for a big paycheck I would fight Cotto and give it my all as well and then get knocked out, that's not saying much you need to earn your shot at the big boy's
Re: Gomez says: Arum SHOW me The Money! Cotto can not hurt me!
I agree this fight really shouldn't be made, Alfonso has not done much, dispatching an aged Arturo Gatti isn't really championship material these days.
Gomez should fight JC Jr. that is an even fight!

Loved this little dig at Sergio Mora ;D JCC jr wont fight Gomez because its a loseable fight.... I think Gomez could give Cotto a good fight, if Urkal can give him a fight, why not Gomez. He didnt walk through Urkal like everyone thought, I think Cottos power is a little overrated at ww. And like Gomez says in the article, he's been in with Middleweights so I dont see Cottos "power" being a problem. His boxing ability, now thats another thing.
Re: Gomez says: Arum SHOW me The Money! Cotto can not hurt me!
fair play to Gomez if he takes this fight. He probly see's this asa win/win though....becuase either way hes going to earn a big payday! However he will be destroyed by Cotto im pretty convinced of that!
Re: Gomez says: Arum SHOW me The Money! Cotto can not hurt me!
.....once again let's remember that Cotto isn't weight drained at 147, Urkal would get absolutely demolished vs Cotto in a rematch.
Also that fight took place in Puerto Rico and he tends to try too hard for the KO when fighting there.

I don't know but against Tackie, Gomez looked pretty beatable by a younger and better fighter such as Cotto. I will give Gomez credit that he showed some heart in that fight. But he better be careful what he asks for. He could be in line for one of the most serious beatings Cotto has ever given an opponent.
Re: Gomez says: Arum SHOW me The Money! Cotto can not hurt me!
i love gomez' confidence..........remember how everyone thought he was going to be a scarificial lamb for pete manfredo on the contender then he stepped up and beat him?
now cotto is no manfredo but hes no world beater either...........cotto is beatable but gomez was tooth and nail with ben tackie and jesse feliciano and cotto would walk thru both of those guys
id pick cotto by UD..gomez is tough though and he'll be there in the end
i think its a good entertaining fight
by the way isnt ben tackie the right age now for hatton to fight him? just a thought...
