With all the different rumors that have circulated in boxing over the last week the one that was the most intriguing had to be the reports of Miguel Cotto putting his belt on the line this spring against the popular Contender star Alfonso Gomez.

As reports circulated and everyone including other fighters put their two cents in, there was nothing coming from Gomez himself...until now.

Pound4Pound spoke with Gomez early Monday about the very topic and according to Gomez, " I started seeing the rumors pop up on the Internet this weekend so I contacted my manager (Gary Gittleson) to find out what was going on. He told me that he was contacted about a fight with Cotto but he told them (Top Rank) that the price would have to be right, and until they came back to him with a realistic offer that he wasn't even going to tell me about it."

Gittleson didn't need to contact Gomez to inform him, news leaked fast and of course Gomez called his long time manager to get the info, and who can blame him? A title fight is what Gomez wants more than anything, and a fight with Cotto is icing on the cake, the payday for that WBA 147 pound crown would surely surpass even Gomez's high expectations.

As to the fight itself there was no doubt Gomez was confident that he could defeat Cotto, regardless of the speculation that is out there. " I don't care what anyone is saying about me not being able to defeat Cotto, they are wrong and they will be surprised to see me once I get into the ring with him. I fought at middleweight and took those punches up there, at 147 Cotto doesn't have that kind of power and he won't be able to hurt me."

As Gomez went on, it was the tone of his voice that made it perfectly clear, Alfonso has no apprehension or fear about getting in the ring with the undefeated Puerto Rican star. " I know I can beat him, I am not worried about what anyone says," said a confident Gomez.

Gomez made things very clear to us that although the fight has been mentioned, there has been no real offer and until then it's all just speculation. In fact Gomez said that names like Kermit Cintron and Paul Williams have been presented as well.

Unlike other Contender stars who choose to "slither" their way through a group of Has Been's & Bums, Gomez's path is clear, and it's paved with the 147 pound elite.

In regard to the injury to his hand suffered in his victory over Ben Tackie, Gomez said it's coming along fine now and he should be back in full swing by February.

By my calculations that's perfect timing to start training for a fight in April, even better if the training is to get ready for this proposed match up with Miguel Cotto.
