Rumours Haton/Mayweather split
Hatton camp in turmoil
LAS VEGAS – Two days before Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton are to meet in the year’s biggest boxing match, a representative of Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach had a conversation with Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer about the possibility of Roach training Hatton in Hatton’s next fight.
Roach’s agent, Nick Khan, had heard of rumors of discontent between Hatton and his trainer, Floyd Mayweather Sr. In a telephone conversation with Schaefer, Khan suggested that Roach would be interested in training Hatton.
“Richard and I were speaking on the phone, though I’m not sure who called who, and I told him how much respect Freddie has for Ricky,” said Khan, who is Pacquiao’s former co-manager. “I suggested that after Manny defeats Ricky on Saturday, which is Freddie’s priority, that we sit down and discuss the possibility of Freddie getting together and working with Ricky.”
A source close to Roach said Schaefer had indicated that Hatton was miserable with Mayweather and was unhappy that Mayweather had arrived late for several workouts.
Schaefer adamantly denied telling anyone he knew of problems between Hatton and Mayweather and said Thursday he was surprised to hear of it from a reporter.
He did say that when he was speaking with Khan that Khan told him Roach was interested in training not only Hatton but also Victor Ortiz, another Golden Boy fighter.
Mayweather didn’t deny that there had been friction between he and Hatton, but said it was nothing out of the ordinary and wasn’t anything that would affect his working relationship with Hatton or the fight Saturday.
Mayweather grinned and said, “you could be on the right track,” when asked if he had problems with Hatton co-trainer Lee Beard, but was more blunt in discussing problems between Hatton and himself. He said he didn’t want to identify them in the media, but he didn’t deny they had issues.
“I addressed the situation and the problems I had with him,” Mayweather said Thursday. “I addressed things with him. I let him know I don’t play that, don’t do that. He knows now. I won’t disrespect him. If I don’t want someone else disrespecting me in no kind of a way, I’m not going to disrespect anybody else in no kind of a way. We have a very clear understanding between each other. I make sure I have a clear understanding with everybody I train because nobody is going to be jerking me around and I take no mess off nobody.”
Hatton was not available to the media Thursday and couldn’t be reached for comment. But he has consistently indicated that he’s happy with Mayweather, whom he hired last summer after breaking with longtime trainer Billy Graham.
Schaefer said Roach “wants to train a lot of fighters,” and said he maintained a good relationship with Roach, a three-time Trainer of the Year. However, Schaefer said he didn’t have the same kind of close relationship with Hatton that he does with Oscar De La Hoya, Bernard Hopkins and Shane Mosley and insisted that he never recommended trainers to them without being asked.
He said he had recommended Naazim Richardson at different times to both De La Hoya and Mosley. Mosley went with his suggestion and used Richardson in a Jan. 24 bout against Antonio Margarito, but De La Hoya instead hired Roach.
Roach said he’d heard rumblings of the discontent between Mayweather and Hatton and said he had heard Hatton became irate when Mayweather was late for numerous training sessions.
Roach, though, did not address Khan’s conversation with Schaefer. Roach rarely pays attention to business dealings and instead relies upon Khan and his longtime friend, Billy Keane. Keane manages many of the fighters that Roach trains, though Keane does not manage Pacquiao.
Re: Rumours Haton/Mayweather split
intresting... i still mentain that Ricky should have stuck with Billy at this late stage of his career instead of using him as a scapgoat for his loss.
Re: Rumours Haton/Mayweather split
Personally i think its a load of bullshit, they seem to get on quite well and seem to have good banter, i mean in an intense situation where your in each others pcokets for five weeks, with two guys with quite big egos and one of the guys a very family orientated person ( Hatton) who hasnt seen any of his family in 5 weeks, your bound to get clashes that would be normality but looking at 24/7 it seems to be nothing and they seem fine.
Mayweatehr seemed quite happy with his sparring work they showed on episode 4 can anyone shed any light onto the record of the figher he was sparring one of Rogers fighters?
Re: Rumours Haton/Mayweather split
Seems to be just rumours, lots of rumours been going around.
Hatton struggling to make weight..Billy Graham suing Hatton...Hatton seeking Roach for next fight...
All just rumours and no real evidence to support these claims thus far.
Re: Rumours Haton/Mayweather split
I don't doubt it at all.
I think if Ricky was to win (which he won't) that everything between him and Mayweather Sr. would be fine and dandy as they would both stand to make more money.....I'm not sure against who though, maybe JMM or a rematch vs Pac or maybe a fight vs Demetrius Hopkins or someone knew could draw some intrest.
In the end I think Floyd Sr. wants to manage FLOYD and anyone who isn't as good as Floyd or as popular/infamous as Floyd he's going to half ass train, IMO. He's jealous of Roger, he's jealous of Floyd, and he's probably none too thrilled about Ricky's more playful nature in camp.
If Ricky switches trainers again it's not going to be good at all because he's either going to Roach or maybe McGirt and both of those guys are a little overrated IMO.
I wish Ricky could have made the jump to 147 better than he did, that way we would have had the fight vs Cotto which would have been wonderful
Re: Rumours Haton/Mayweather split
It seems pretty clear there is friction, I mean Floyd Sr even admitted it but I love how they make this article look like there have been talks to have Roach train Hatton when the only ones in the article suggesting it are Roach and Pacman's manager ;D
Re: Rumours Haton/Mayweather split
any links to this? i hope this doesnt become another excuse.

How can you say that Roach is overrated? 3 times trainer of the year (considering his number of years as a trainer in the business, it,s awesome), many world champions under his belt, he's definitely not overrated. As for McGirt (which I am absolutely not keen on), where do you pull out that EITHER Roach or McGirt are to train Ricky? Any references or it just comes out from your mind?
Re: Rumours Haton/Mayweather split
Not really a surprising news. DLH wear make-up and fishnets, and Ricky loves to wear his GF's thong.
There's no doubt in my mind that Floyd Sr is a big homophobe and a bigot.
Re: Rumours Haton/Mayweather split
Hatton has two more fights to go, three tops, he will stick with Mayweather until he retires.
Re: Rumours Haton/Mayweather split
This is all bullshit. In the 24/7 episodes there have been no tension of any kind that I have seen. It's all bullshit.

I just think Freddy is given too much credit for the skill that James Toney and Manny Pacquiao naturally have.
I just brought Buddy up because of Arturo Gatti, a similar fighter to Hatton and if Ricky wanted to learn how to box and he was getting rid of Mayweather Sr. then Buddy McGirt would be an obvious choice.

Yeah because 24/7 really does show EVERYTHING in the fighters lives doesn't it?
Come on  - It's still a TV show and there are boundaries to how much and what exactly they can air to millions of people.
I have heard this also and it would not surprise me in the least if there were some rumblings in camp Hatton.
Although, for those saying he should have stuck with Billy Graham, I think it proved a good gamble for Ricky as was shown by his performance against Mallignagi. I too thought it was a mistake switching trainers so late in the day but I think it really paid off for him.
Re: Rumours Haton/Mayweather split
Hatton's win over Malinaggi was less meaningful than Pac's win over a weight drained ODH!
Malinaggi fought with 1 hand and he's not that great of a threat with 2 hands
Re: Rumours Haton/Mayweather split
Sky tv are more or less backing this up as fact and it's 100% gonna unsettle any fighter esp between rounds.
I think the whole 24/7 thing is getting to Floyd snr to be honest and he seems to like the limelight more than focussing on Ricky.
