Juan Manuel Marquez's own trainer, Nacho Beristain, is expressing great concern over his fighter's lack of speed heading into the final stages of training for his September 19 fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

From PhilBoxing.com, as reported by Hesiquio Balderas:

"Juan Manuel is very strong, he looks like a natural welterweight, but it worries me a lot that we can't get to the speed level that we are looking for, and we can't compete with a fighter of the quality of Floyd Mayweather with that f***ing lack of speed. The sparring partners are not a problem, it is the work we did to increase the muscle. He is tense and as I said he is very strong and buffed, but he has no speed at this point and that is because the weight lifting he did was excessive. It's like a soccer player after working with weights, they are strong but they lack the speed and the rhythm to compete. That is the way Juan Manuel is right now I am desperate at this point. But there is still time to get him speed, the problem is that the weight lifting is giving us a hard time."

Beristain's worry is bad news to those hoping for the Marquez upset (which is a lot of people), but it could also simply be a ploy. It adds up that Marquez would lose speed, and speed against Mayweather was going to be a problem for him even without bulking up the way he did. But they might be trying to make Floyd Jr. think this is going to be easier than they (the Marquez camp) really believe it will be. Maybe they intend to catch Floyd rusty or even napping.

But if it's legit, yes, it's a real problem. There's not much time left (about three weeks to be exact) and without being able to find Mayweather, the fight plays out with Floyd battering Marquez and probably putting him away early, which is the way a lot of people are seeing the fight in the first place.

You reckon this is just a red herring ???

I reckon they're trying to lull Floyd into being underprepared, no way would he come out with this before the fight like this. Beristain is too experienced to do that, he didn't come out talking about ODLH's weight difficulties did he??

If its true, its very bad news. But, who knows if it it a tactic or not. Beristain is a pretty serious guy though, so this is concerning. Why would his stregnth coach bulk him up in that way is my question.

That's what i though.

Then i wondered how a comment like that could affect sales/ interest/ upset networks etc and so i figured would he make such a potentially irresponisble and damaging claim for the sake of a bit of comlaintencey?

Exactly. I was reminded of Shane Mosley's comments on using weights and how it affected his performances. I really hope this isn't true...?

I'm not convinced that they would go public with something like this and it be real, but, i'm sure Mayweathers camp are far from gonna fall for a blag like that....

I know he did, that's what I was saying, he didn't mention it even though he knew there were problems. I just think he's got too much experience to come out mentioning that without a purpose.

Yeah, I would hope so. But Nacho just doesnt come across as the type of guy to go out of his way to play mind games either. I do think that Marquez will be a lot slower because of the weight, no matter how he put it on. I dint think his frame will carry 147 that well. Im hoping he comes in around 143.

140.5 would be ideal :rolleyes:

Its gotta be a ruse to fuck with Floyd's head. Why on earth would someone as experienced as Nacho say that?

Since when was Beristain a smart guy? He has a history of making bad decisions for Marquez (out of the ring).

Wouldn't surprise me if he was telling the truth ;D
