Serious Question... What was John Ruiz' best performance?
;D Again, this IS a serious question so Fantana need not respond :p
No, really what has been John Ruiz most effective display of boxing? I'm not really after his most exciting fight... Just a fight that would be a great starting point for someone (like me) who hasn't really taken much notice of John Ruiz over the years (except for when he got his arse handed to him by a pair of middleweights).
Thanks guys ;)

probably his first fight against Holyfield. Holyfield had just come off the back to back fights with Lennox Lewis, so he was still considered, at least the 2nd best fighter in the world. Ruiz lost the decision, but probablly should have gotten the nod in this fight.
That being said all of Ruiz's win are ussually pretty cheap with his throw a punch then run in and hug style, and the above fight was no exception.

Thanks mate. That's the fight I have loading up on Youtube now... A stinker no doubt but I assumed it was against a fairly live opponent at least.
Re: Serious Question... What was John Ruiz' best performance?
Cant remember which One it was but he had Holyfield falling over and grabbing his laegs and the ropes and anything to survive the fight, Ruiz even dropped to all fours and crawled away from Holyfields holding;D
If he can drop Holyfield, maybe everyone who cant stand Haye will have a laugh when Ruiz drops him as well;D
Re: Serious Question... What was John Ruiz' best performance?
I don't know about his best performance, but I know what was his greatest accomplishment. He was the 1st Puerto Rican champion that his people really didn't want or even associate with. That's a hell of an accomplishment especially coming from the Ricans that love their boxing champs.;D
Re: Serious Question... What was John Ruiz' best performance?
John Ruiz when he totally outclassed a prime Jameel Mcline, the guy who decked the seemingly unhurtable Samuel Peter. Many people wrote John Ruiz off, not I. John did what any great fighter does, he won.
Remember he was coming of the back rip off decisions here, a warm up fight with Otis Tisdale whom he just outgunned in 2 blistering rounds.
You also need to remember, John Ruiz knocked out Tony Tucker. Lennox Lewis could not do that in his first title fight (which he got $9 million for, the highest purse for a first defense at the time, not sure if it still stands) and neither could Mike Tyson. What does this tell you about John Ruiz?
Anyone who thinks Haye has a chance against John Ruiz doesn't know anything about John Ruiz. I suggest you go watch 300, with Gerrard Butler, who does an outstanding job of representing John Ruiz for the silver screen.
Re: Serious Question... What was John Ruiz' best performance?
John's boxing skills are massively underrated. It's extremely difficult to win fights without even throwing a punch, yet win he does.
I'd urge anyone to watch his last six, maybe seven, fights back-to-back and tell me that he isn't ferocious on the inside!!
Re: Serious Question... What was John Ruiz' best performance?
Yeah I would have said the first Holyfield fight as well. Nothing spectacular from Ruiz but a decent showing.
Re: Serious Question... What was John Ruiz' best performance?
Probably in his fight with Chuck Norris where his constant hugging was really causing Chuck problems, but then he got kicked in half.
Re: Serious Question... What was John Ruiz' best performance?
He's our heavyweight cockroach. He's ugly and you hate to see him but he's everywhere you look and you hate to see him.
He has not also fought like a stroke victim wrapped in a wet blanket, early on he really boxed well, less fawning boyfriend clinching.Had a early showdown with Kobozev and should have got w.Say what you want he's always dangerous.Save for the Tua fight but busted knuckles happen as well.I think Haye-Ruiz is 50-50.
Re: Serious Question... What was John Ruiz' best performance?
Seriously it was his 2nd fight with Evander Holyfield, as i remember it. It wasn't that bad of a fight and Evander Holyfield, fought a better fight than in there 1st meeting.
And Evander Holyfield was ahead on my scorecard, until John Ruiz decked him late. And had him badly hurt i hadn't seen Evander Holyfield that hurt, at that time since the 3rd Riddick Bowe fight.
I'd personally watch there 2nd meeting, because it isn't a bad fight. And John Ruiz shows some heart coming on, and turning the fight around late on.
John Ruiz doesn't get enough credit for the 1st two Evander Holyfield fights, i personally think he won the 1st two fights. And Evander Holyfield was fresh off his fights vs Lennox Lewis. Yet Lennox Lewis gets more credit than John Ruiz, just because John Ruiz isn't liked because of his ugly style. Which isn't fair IMO.
Re: Serious Question... What was John Ruiz' best performance?
He beat Kirk Johnson when I didn't expect him to beat him.
Re: Serious Question... What was John Ruiz' best performance?
This might sound insane but.... I think I want to see Ruiz vs Wlad. Do you think he would frustrate Wlad out of his game plan? lol Wlad usually holds on the inside, but Ruiz would totally beat him to it!
And the best part is, if it end in Ruiz getting KOd by Wlad, I think still no one will be disappointed. lol
