Novice Trying to Make a Purchase

I am trying to purchase a heavy bag for a gift for my husband. He is a novice, weighs 155lbs, and is about six feet tall, but is quite strong. I am trying to research the best options, but I am not having a lot of luck. I am thinking we need to get a stand for it, because mounting it is not a real option in our house. If I am using a stand and knowing his height and weight, what kind of bag do you recommend? What weight? What kind of filling? What kind of casing? Canvas vs. vinyl? I want to spend around $200, I can get a stand for $100, so I don't have a huge budget for the bag...I am seeing a lot for around $60, but those seem cheep and the reviews are not great...do I need to spend more to get something decent? Does Dick's Sporting Goods have anything worthwhile? Sorry, lots of questions! I just don't want to get him something that will fall apart or not work for him at all...

I do believe you need to spend more then $60 for something 1/2 decent. For starters I believe the bag should be 100 lbs and that right there will raise the cost from a lot of the cheaper ones. As far as vinyl or canvas, i prefer canvas/ woven polyester for durability. don't have much experience with the vinyl so can't really say.

Thank you for the feedback. The bag you sent is in line with what I want. I agree, I thought $60 was too little to spend on a bag, it just didn't seem like it be of any real quality. I will have a look at this bag, thank you for your time!

I suppose I should have asked you where you live, as in, what country. Shipping costs if you are ordering online might be a big factor also.

I live in the US. Would a 100lb bag work okay on a stand? Its not too heavy is it?

It works on a stand but personally, if you can fix it somewhere I think it would be better.

is a good question. you def need it to support the weight properly. they should all say what weight they hold tho, and people with floor mounts often tend to have smaller bags...and the things just fly around. not the best combo. plus there is little room for footwork. optimally it would be best secured to a ceiling mount/beam. understanding that isn't always an avail option,then a wall mount...and then lastly the floor stands if no other options.

In the US you have lots of options, so you're good to go. Maybe if you're close to or in a city buying directly would save some $ on shipping?

If he's 6 foot and 155lb i think he should be looking at the inflatable ones. ;D

Only kidding, if you are buying one i'd pay a little extra and get a quality, durable one. I've got a 100lb in the garden, and i've had that for around 4 years, and it has littlle wear and tear on it, and that's with leaving it out in the rain.

Think it cost about £200 with the stand.

Best cheapest place to buy heavy bags is craigslist. A lot of people quit boxing and sell almost brand new heavy bags on there.

I bought the everlast nevatear 100 pound bag brand new and it sucked. the bottom ripped out of it after less than six months.
