Re: Pacman weighs 144.6lbs
Thanks for posting this. dam thats a big weight difference. I cant wait to see it though.
Re: Pacman weighs 144.6lbs
wait a minute, pacquiao asked for this weight so he's the only one to blame if he happens to lose!
Re: Pacman weighs 144.6lbs
I'd be concern if he weigh-in more than that. 144ish is just about right. They're right on target. He'll prolly show up exactly 150 tomorrow.
Another case of SIZE vs SPEED.

So how the hell is this a light middleweight fight if Pacquiao isnt even a full blown welterweight? So if for example, Bernard Hopkins wanted to challenge David Haye for the Wba heavyweight title, could he weigh in a 180lbs - and if he won, would he be considered a heavyweight champ. To me , Pacman should be obligated to weigh in , at the light middle weight boundaries
Who really cares about paper titles. This isn't even for the real LMW championship. Just a trinket.
And it has happen throughout boxing history where 1 fighter doesn't even meet the weight's class minimum limit.
Sugar Ray Robinson fought Joey Maxim for the LHW championship and he only weighed 157, not even a full MW.
Henry Armstrong fought for the WW title numerous times when he came in below the LW limit, Armstrong even fought for the MW title when he wasn't even a full blown WW years later against Ceferino Garcia.
And you know what? Who cares.
Re: Pacman weighs 144.6lbs
I didn't know this was for JrMW Championship. That does make things more interesting though its diminished a tad by the fact that Margarito must make 150. Its not as bad as SRL demanding Lalonde fight at 1671bs only to turn around and claim the LHW title, but these weight demands are getting tedious.
I don't mind one fighter fighting below a divisional weight though. If they want to take the risk, so be it. Its hard to frame that as an advantage, speed notwithstanding. If the speed produced by low weight really cancels out the power and size advantages of a heavier boxer, then why have divisions at all?
I do wonder why Pac is willing to fight Margaito at JrMW but not Mosley or Williams at Welter? If he's willing to go all the way up to JrMW, why not just fight the biggest Welters out there? I know Williams is 6' 1" but Pac could just demand he weigh in on the day of the fight. That would be fairer, and probably more effective, than demanding a lowering of the divisional weight limit.
Re: Pacman weighs 144.6lbs
There is nothing wrong with Manny coming in under the limit. It's coming in over the limit that is the problem. My own issue is with catchweights. I just don't think they are neccessary and just detract from a fight. If you want it at JMW then have it at 154. If you still want to come in lighter then fair enough, but it's wrong to limit the other guy to a catchweight IMO.
I also think the whole being a champ in a million different divisions is a bit of a hoax too. Pac doesn't clean out divisions, always enforces catchweights and even then doesn't always fight the best in the division. He's a great fighter, but there is a degree of smoke and mirrors at play with all the headlines about it being for how many weight titles it now is.

Guy this has been uncovered already. Roach likes to drain fighters just enough to give Manny the edge to win.
Re: Pacman weighs 144.6lbs
It will be a joke if they make it for the light middleweight title when Pac isnt a light middleweight . He was closer to jnr welter.
If we ignore all the talk of divisional titles and look at the fight for what it is. Pac has given away weight to a guy who used to have a reputation for being a dangerous fighter. Could it play a part? Its only a few pounds. David Haye gave away 100lbs when he fought Valuev and that was an easy fight. 7 stone is significant. I only think the weight in this fight would be significant if both guys were on an equal playing field skillwise but thats not the case. Pac is in his prime whereas Marg got blown away by a washed up 38 year old a couple years ago. There can only be one winner but weve seen bigger upsets I suppose.

The third Duran Leonard fight had both boxers weighing in at Middleweight even though they fought for the Super middleweight title.
And Leonard and Lalonde fought for the Light Heavyweight title even though they both weighed in under the Super Middleweight limit, which they also boxed for.
The more serious question about this fight should be "What did Margerito do to earn his high ranking with the WBC?"

Re: Pacman weighs 144.6lbs
They said in the 24/7 that Manny had eased off on the strength training as he felt it slowed him down. I am not sure if I am inclined to believe that as it just might be another way of provoking Tony to come in and fight reckless, but honestly the guy knows no other way to fight.

Be under Bob Arum ...... maybe?
Re: Pacman weighs 144.6lbs
and what did pacquiao do to earn his high ranking?
Re: Pacman weighs 144.6lbs
My opinion is that by weighing 144 Pac is trying to maximize his speed, his most important asset against Margarito. Maybe Roach and Ariza have realized that weighing more than around 145 detracts from Pac's advantages in speed.
