70 Greatest Mexican Fighters Ever
One of the hardest lists to come up with in Boxing is a Greatest Mexican fighters ever list. The top 5 ain't to hard. In a Top 10 you already start seeing a difference of opinion. Top 20 and you already looking at a bunch of different lists. Mexico's has had so many great fighters that it's pretty hard for a fan with good knowledge to accurately rank them. Truth be told not everybody should be allowed to make a list. Cuz it's that hard. Even a expert will find it challenging. Good thing for y'all muthafukkas here, The Boxing encyclopedia Violent D himself frequents these boards. And he works the graveyard shift where 4 out of the 8 hours at work he literally don't do shit. So he gifts you guys the top 70 Greatest Mexican Fighters list ever. I could of gone to a 150 on this. So yes there are some fighters that were left out. But I stand by my choices and it's the closet to accurate list you can possibly get. Anybody that disagrees is free to give there reason why. Anybody that disagrees just to disagree can go fuck themselves.

I wanna see a top 5 Jewish fighters of all time from you next.
Re: 70 Greatest Mexican Fighters Ever
Jimenez and Borboa were good fighters, saw them at the Forum years ago.
Pretty educational. I'd never heard of Battling Shaw, and I thought you had missed Bandit Romero. Didn't realize he was born in San Diego.

Re: 70 Greatest Mexican Fighters Ever
top 11 fighters named mike...?
Re: 70 Greatest Mexican Fighters Ever
HOLY CRAP!
THIS i gonna take some time. But you have won my heart by having Puas number 1!
Re: 70 Greatest Mexican Fighters Ever
OK some more measured thoughts. But first I cannot even IMAGINE how much work this was. So thanks for that!
I think you have the first two right. I LOVE Finito but as dominant as he was I'm just not sure he beat guys as good as those Sal Sanchez or Carlos Zarate or Saldivar beat. JMM, as great as he is hasn't either. I mean Sal beat Azumah and Little Red and LaPorte and Castillo. DAMN!
Then I've got some quibbles. Rafael Marquez always get short shrift. Who has JMM beaten who was as good as Mark Johnson or Izzy or Tim Austin?
I also think Chiquita Gonzales' wins over Carbajal and Chang might mean he belongs higher.
Lastly I think there's is an entire group that belongs higher. The Mexican bantams from 1960 or so through about 1973 were an absolutely terriffic bunch who got a bunch of their losses to one another. Chucho Castillo, Jose Medel, Jesus Pimintel, Rodolfo Martinez, Rafael Hererra, Romeo Anaya all belong no lower than 25-30 in my view. They just kicked the crap out of each other.
But again, this is a heroic effort. The only name I don't think you included is El Raton, Raul Macias. He's a top 25 guy at worst.

Tough to argue with that list. 6-10 would be who? How about Choyinski, Tendler, Mendoza, Levinsky and Fields?

I love Chavez. And don't have a problem seeing him listed at number 1 in most lists. But it seems like he's just listed at number 1 automatically cuz people are so use to seeing him being listed at 1. I consider Oliveras to be the best Bantamweight ever. His resume is outstanding and I think edges Chavez for number 1
Juan Manuel Marquez was a little hard cuz he's still fighting. I rate him so high cuz I consider his fights with Pacquiao and the John fight to be wins for him. He's also beaten naturally bigger fighters these last couple of years. Being the only man to ever stop Joel Casamayor scores him a lot of points with me.
Humberto Gonzalez I actually had a little higher. But dropped him a little. He was a great fighter. But that loss to Rolando Pascua bugs the hell out of me. Always has. Without that loss Gonzalez is easily top 10
I agree the Batamnweights from the 60's and 70's were outstanding fighters. They hurt each others standings by beating each other. But I didn't forget about them. Castillo, Pimintel, and Hererra are listed.

I figured as much in the bold on JMM. I just don't think you can pick and choose decisions you disagree with and reverse them. Not because they might not have been wrong but because to be fair you'd have to go through the entire recordbook and do it for everyone. But again, your list, your criteria.
The Pascua loss by Chiquita is one of the headscratchers of the last 30 years. Just bizarre.
Like I said, this was a massive piece of work and is gonna keep me busy thinking for a few days. Thanks for that!

Good list. Agreed with here > Top 5 Jewish Boxers of All Time
Re: 70 Greatest Mexican Fighters Ever
I'd love to hear your thoughts on where Pipino Cuevas fits. One of the very few teenage champs and for about five years was an absolute wrecking machine. He started slow and finished terribly, but man those dozen or so fights in the middle? He was every bit as destructive as Mike Tyson was for his dozen best. I wish he and Palomino had gotten together.

Great list VD this is why i've always said, your one of the most knowledgable posters i've ever met.
But i have to say i think Ruben Castillo maybe a little bit overrated being ranked number 1, i haven't seen loads of his fights. I've seen quite a few though and know a bit about him.
But im no expert by any means, but he only made 6 defenses at Bantamweight right ? and when he moved up he was unsuccesful mostly.
His best wins above Bantamweight were against young Ramirez, Chacon. But he failed against Kotey, Lopez, Arguello, Pedroza.
Now i realize this is above his best weightclass, but did he really dominate enough at Bantamweight to be ranked number 1 ?

I can safely go fuck someone else, this is a great list! I would have Salvador Sanchez higher but...no real argument here.
